Facade engineering, Lighting design, Structural engineering

海角视频 was engaged to provide expertise in both structural and facade engineering for the new headquarters of the pharmaceutical company Dr Falk Pharma, which will be located in Freiburg, Germany.

Architect Cobe鈥檚 competition-winning design draws inspiration from the architecture of the the city鈥檚 historic locomotive workshop building, Die Freiburger Lokhalle, which is located next to the site, taking cues from its pitched roofs and rational, industrial design language. The 18,500m虏 future-proof innovation campus will offer 700 workplaces, restaurants and public facilities.

Challenge

The pharmaceutical company is keen to create a vibrant, attractive, comfortable and sustainable headquarters for its employees alongside flexible leasable space. Generous spaces such as the atrium create a point of encounter between the employees of the various companies, strengthening a positive work environment.

The vision is that the building will feature flexible and robust workspaces, which will facilitate different styles of working, with visual connections through the interior spaces and direct access to the greenery of the courtyards and squares. This flexible design also allows the headquarters to adapt over time as the needs of the company and the tenants evolve and vary.

The building structure consists of a modular hybrid-timber construction with wooden office interiors creating a calming working atmosphere.

Structurally, the aspiration was to minimise the embodied carbon of the development, while enabling flexible and adaptable interior spaces.

Solution

The design keeps the same structural grid in the superstructure as in the substructure. This regular form, following the same structural footprint across each level, enables an elegantly simple and uncluttered design, without the need for complex load transfers. The use of timber/concrete hybrid slabs for each floor helps to further reduce the embodied carbon intensity of the overall project, while also creating a warm and modern aesthetic.

The system used also enables an industrialised construction process, with factory fabrication of modular elements. These ready-made elements can be delivered to the site as completed units, speeding up the construction phasing and ensuring factory-finish grade quality. A two-level basement provides parking for cars and bikes and spaces for technical equipment and air-handling units.

The building is wrapped in a green facade, with maintenance walkways created within the facade to allow access to the plants, which will grow up the outside of the building. The species, varying in length, colour and density, will create a playful yet cohesive envelope. Not only will they contribute to the appearance of the building, but they will also play a role in regulating the temperature and solar radiation on the interior, by creating passive shading.

The exterior facade mimics the industrial aesthetics of the neighbouring locomotive hall, with aluminium powder-coated with a rust-like finish. Behind this framework, a second timber stud wall plays a carefully curated role in the passive shading strategy.

海角视频 also provided a daylighting study for the project and advice on the use of recycled concrete, both of which supported the client鈥檚 bid for DGNB Gold sustainability certification. The central atrium is the heart of the building, providing a communal atmosphere across the office spaces. The ground floor offers a caf茅 and restaurant. Social zones on all floors will promote interaction between the employees and strengthen a positive work environment. A roof garden will incorporate greenhouse-like meeting rooms.
