New theatre venue for Bath community
New community theatre project continues 海角视频鈥檚 longstanding link with Theatre Royal Bath.
In 1989, 海角视频 delivered the engineering needed to build the Ustinov Studio, an intimate studio theatre backing onto the main Theatre Royal. In 2005, engineering was again provided by our team to develop The Egg theatre complex, now an international centre for young audiences and creative education.
Our long-standing relationship with Theatre Royal Bath continues with the creation of Venue 4, a low-cost and accessible studio space for local people to stage their own productions.
The new venue will cater for up 50, and provide high-quality and easy to use sound, lighting and production facilities. Accessible to all, hire of the studio will be supported by dedicated producer and Head of Community Engagement, Katherine Lazare.
海角视频 is providing MEP, fire and structural services to the project. For MEP these include heating, ventilation, cooling, power, lighting and domestic water services.

One of the main challenges around the project is fitting this new multi-purpose space within an existing building, whilst maintaining the operation of the existing venues, stage door and administration offices. Our engineers have provided expert guidance on the sequencing of the engineering and construction works to facilitate this complex piece of construction.
The new venue ceiling is being raised to accommodate the additional height required for performance. This will be achieved by removing the existing first floor and replacing this with a new floor and structure, and as part of this new work, removing an existing column from what will be the new performance space.
Working closely with the Theatre Royal Bath and the design team, our MEP engineers have limited the impact of the new MEP systems on the building by repurposing existing services routes and adapting the roof plant deck to accommodate the new air handling plant for venue 4.
The new venue, once complete, will provide in-kind or low cost but high-quality rehearsal and performance space, as well as become the new home for Engage, the theatre鈥檚 adult participation and learning programme, a city festival base and a space for commercial hire.

Project director Mark Owen said, 鈥淭his project is great example of how we as engineers can provide sensible, cost efficient and suitable engineering solutions to what is quite a complex intervention/construction piece. Our long-standing relationship with the TRB and incumbent knowledge of the building is invaluable in the development of Venue 4.
鈥淚n conjunction with the Theatre Royal Bath we are utilising the project as a great learning opportunity for our young engineers. They have been involved firsthand in the development of the design process and will be engaging further in the construction phase, developing the next generation of cultural MEP engineers.鈥
Head of Development at Theatre Royal, Andrea Harris said, 鈥淲hat you see on stage is part of a much bigger story. Building Venue 4 is about diversifying the pipeline of talent by giving everyone the chance to gain professional venue experience. Nestling Venue 4 in the heart of our historic site creates a conduit between our producing activity and our community work that will promote cultural resilience and offer access to creativity for local performers of all types.
Venue 4 is designed by London-based architect and Stirling Prize winner, Haworth Tompkins. The firm鈥檚 theatre design experience includes The Egg and the Ustinov, as well as The National Theatre and The Young Vic.
