Turning a sculptural vision into a high-performance building
Perched above the Hudson River, the Samuel H. Scripps Theater Center at Hudson Valley Shakespeare feels less like a constructed object and more like an extension of the landscape itself.
Its sweeping timber canopy and gently sculpted form invites air, light, and sound to move freely through the space, creating an environment that feels as fluid and alive as the performances it hosts.
But beneath that sense of ease lies a deeply coordinated technical effort. This technical rigor is matched by ambitious sustainability goals.
The project is on track to achieve LEED Platinum, targeting 83 out of 84 available points despite site constraints, setting a new benchmark for high – performance cultural design.
Ƶ worked in close collaboration with to translate an expressive, landscape-responsive vision into a high – performance building, one where complex systems is carefully integrated yet largely invisible, and where engineering supports, rather than competes with, the architecture.
In this discussion with Partner, Gabe Guilliams, Principal, Oliver Meade, Associate, Rajiv Panday, and Senior Mechanical Engineer, Molly Hazlehurst, we explore the behind ‑ the ‑ scenes coordination, sustainability strategies, and technical ingenuity that shaped the new Samuel H. Scripps Theater Center at Hudson Valley Shakespeare.

Making complexity disappear
“What appears simple is actually highly coordinated,” says Oliver Meade. The building relies on exposed mass timber, with almost no concealed plenums or soffits to hide infrastructure. At the same time, the theater accommodates advanced AV and lighting systems that require extensive power, communications, and control distribution networks.
Resolving that tension required close collaboration with Studio Gang from the earliest design stages. Together, the teams defined routing strategies, pathway dimensions, and integration details that would allow the timber structure to remain visually dominant while still supporting the technical demands of performance.

“We had to ensure piping and ductwork were carefully concealed, so they didn’t overemphasize the MEP systems but instead highlighted the architectural features,” says Panday.

Most conduits are fully concealed yet remain accessible, ensuring functionality without compromising the architecture. Beyond the building itself, the team also had to carefully consider external infrastructure, transformers, condensing units, fire-protection tanks, and a pump house, particularly given the project’s rural setting. These elements were studied early and sited with intention, allowing them to remain essential but largely invisible to visitors.
All of the things that we’re doing to limit energy it limits the infrastructure, so what you see is a cleaner, simpler building and it really helps make the architecture more expressive.

This level of coordination extends to material selection, where low-carbon concrete, FSC- and SFI – certified timber, and low-emitting finishes contribute to a 24% reduction in embodied carbon compared to conventional construction.
Designing for performance on and off the stage
In an open – air theater, performance extends beyond the stage to encompass the entire sensory experience, including sound.
“We worked closely with the acoustics engineer, since equipment sits outdoors or directly adjacent to the theater,” explains Molly Hazlehurst. “That proximity creates direct noise and vibration pathways.”
To address this, Ƶ helped coordinate and implement mitigation strategies that ensure building services remain acoustically unobtrusive. The result is an environment where audiences experience only the intended performance, not the systems supporting it.
These strategies are complemented by an all-electric design with no on-site combustion, positioning the building to achieve net-zero operational carbon by 2040 as the electrical grid continues to decarbonize.
“From a plumbing perspective, we prioritized electric systems wherever possible, alongside low-flow fixtures and on – site solar, to reduce both water and energy demand,” Panday explains.

Embedding flexibility through infrastructure
Flexibility was a central driver of the project, allowing the theater to adapt seamlessly to a wide range of uses, from rehearsals to standing-room performances to community events.
From an engineering perspective, this required a deliberate balance between permanence and adaptability. The theater includes robust, permanent power distribution, but avoids fixed theatrical systems such as dedicated dimmer racks or hardwired lighting configurations.
“Our role was to make that variability possible,” says Hazlehurst. “The systems needed to support change, season to season, without adding complexity for users.”
At the same time, spatial design reinforces this flexibility. The sweeping roof creates a continuous sheltered concourse that connects back-of-house spaces, restrooms, and concessions. By routing conduit below grade or within integrated pathways, and keeping overhead spaces clear of visible systems, the design maintains a seamless, intuitive experience for both performers and visitors.

Precision in timber coordination
The project’s defining architectural feature is the exposed timber structure which also introduced one of its greatest coordination challenges.
“With timber, you have to plan everything in advance,” Hazlehurst explains. “Openings for conduit and services need to be carefully located and coordinated before fabrication.”
Ƶ worked closely with Studio Gang and the mass timber manufacturer to align design intent with construction realities. Some routed elements would remain visible, requiring a level of precision that ensured they felt intentional and integrated into the architecture.
Because the primary structural components were manufactured off-site, all penetrations had to be defined upfront. “There aren’t many opportunities to adjust once the timber arrives,” says Meade. “That meant fully understanding how systems would route and interact with the structure well ahead of construction.”
Drawing on its broader experience with mass timber and gridshell structures, the team was able to anticipate constraints and coordinate solutions across disciplines, ensuring performance, durability, and design integrity.

Aligning around ambition
While the technical challenges were significant, the project’s success ultimately hinged on alignment.
“A major takeaway is the importance of setting sustainability goals early,” says Meade. “You can’t layer them in once design is underway.”
From the outset, the client established a clear ambition: to achieve LEED Platinum. That early commitment enabled Ƶ and the wider project team to define scope, align strategies, and inform decisions around budget, fundraising, and delivery.
More importantly, it created a shared vision.
“We optimized a rainwater harvesting system by analyzing six years of rainfall data, allowing us to rightsize the cistern for both performance and cost efficiency,” Panday explains. “That system now provides approximately 75% of the building’s flushing demand.”
“The real breakthrough was that alignment,” Meade reflects. “High-performance design is something we do well though it is most powerful when the client fully prioritizes it. This wasn’t about meeting a baseline. Sustainability was central to the story they wanted the project to tell.”

A new model for cultural design
The Samuel H. Scripps Theater Center at Hudson Valley Shakespeare demonstrates how architecture, engineering, and sustainability can work together to produce spaces that feel both natural and highly refined.
By embedding performance into every decision, from hidden infrastructure to acoustic control to long-term flexibility, Ƶ helped realize a design that is as technically rigorous as it is experiential.
