Los Angeles County Museum of Art鈥檚 new David Geffen Galleries reimagines how art is encountered聽

Hovering above Wilshire Boulevard in a sweeping line of concrete and glass, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art鈥檚 new David Geffen Galleries redefines not only the institution it serves, but the very idea of how a museum can operate in the 21st century. 

Designed by Pritzker Prize鈥搘inning architect Peter Zumthor, the building consolidates LACMA鈥檚 permanent collection into a single, elevated plane. This ambitious architectural gesture challenges conventions of hierarchy, circulation, and public engagement.  

For 海角视频, the project demanded a similarly radical rethinking of engineering: an integrated, performance-led approach capable of realizing an architecture that is at once structurally daring, environmentally responsive, and curatorially transformative.

A continuous landscape of art and infrastructure 

Stretching nearly 900 feet across the site and bridging one of Los Angeles鈥 busiest thoroughfares, the building is conceived as a continuous gallery suspended approximately 30 feet above the ground on a series of pavilions.  

This single-level arrangement creates a connected sequence of galleries without a prescribed route, allowing visitors to move freely through the collection and encounter works from different cultures and time periods in unexpected proximity. 

Delivering this vision required engineering that could operate with equal adaptability. 海角视频鈥檚 multidisciplinary team worked across MEP, lighting, and sustainability to ensure that the building鈥檚 systems support – not constrain – the spatial openness and curatorial flexibility of the design. 

The result is a museum conceived less as a sequence of rooms and more as a calibrated environment. One capable of hosting everything from light-sensitive antiquities to contemporary installations within a seamless spatial continuum.

Light, climate, and the art of balance 

At LACMA, environmental performance is inseparable from the visitor experience. Floor-to-ceiling glazing along the building perimeter introduces daylight and expansive views of Los Angeles, placing the city itself in dialogue with the collection.  

Yet this openness introduces a fundamental tension: how to reconcile the variability of natural light and climate with the stringent requirements of art conservation. 

海角视频 addressed this challenge through a nuanced environmental strategy that distinguishes between gallery types. Perimeter spaces operate with more flexible environmental criteria. They enhance occupant comfort and reduce energy demand while interior galleries provide tightly controlled conditions for sensitive works.

This layered approach extends to the building systems themselves. Radiant slabs and ceilings provide the primary means of heating and cooling, dramatically reducing reliance on conventional air distribution. Conditioned air is introduced discreetly through openings integrated into the architecture, entering at the center of the plan and moving outward toward the perimeter galleries. 

This calibrated airflow strategy supports the building鈥檚 environmental zoning: perimeter spaces accommodate more flexible conditions, while enclosed interior galleries maintain tightly controlled temperatures and humidity for sensitive works. By embedding air movement within the architectural language – and rendering it largely imperceptible to visitors – the design preserves both spatial clarity and curatorial performance. 

Daylighting is similarly moderated through perimeter glazing and custom textile shading systems, ensuring a careful balance between visual openness and conservation. 

Rather than resisting environmental variability, the project carefully mediates natural variability – turning light and atmosphere into active components of the museum experience.

Sustainability at institutional scale 

Museums are among the most energy-intensive building types. At LACMA, reducing that footprint without compromising curatorial ambition became a central design driver. 

海角视频鈥檚 approach combines passive strategies, systems optimization, and resource efficiency to deliver a high-performance building aligned with ambitious sustainability goals, including LEED Gold certification. Central to this is a shift away from energy-intensive air systems toward radiant conditioning and low-velocity, precisely controlled air movement.

Key interventions include: 

  • Extensive use of radiant slabs and ceilings to reduce operational energy demand 
  • Low-velocity air distribution integrated into the architecture, minimizing mechanical load while maintaining conservation-grade conditions 
  • A highly progressive water recycling system using captured rainwater for irrigation, cooling, and non-potable uses  
  • Reduced embodied carbon through low-carbon concrete, material efficiency and simplified construction systems  
  • Flexible environmental criteria that align conservation needs with energy performance  

These strategies reflect a broader shift in museum design, from static, tightly controlled environments toward adaptive systems that balance preservation with sustainability.

Opening the museum to the city 

If the gallery level floats above, the ground plane does the opposite: it opens.  

By consolidating exhibition space into a single elevated volume, the project liberates the site below as a civic landscape featuring education spaces, retail, and public spaces within a series of pavilions while creating shaded plazas and gathering spaces for the city.  

This inversion – lifting the museum to give the ground back to the public – repositions LACMA as both cultural institution and urban infrastructure. It enables new forms of engagement, from outdoor installations to public artworks integrated into the campus.  

For 海角视频, this required careful alignment between building systems and public use, ensuring that performance, comfort, and resilience extend beyond the gallery walls.

A new archetype for museums 

The  represent a profound departure from the traditional encyclopedic museum. By abandoning chronological and geographic hierarchies in favor of a global, interconnected narrative, the building reshapes how collections are experienced and how institutions define themselves.  

Engineering plays a central role in enabling this shift. From environmental flexibility to structural ambition, the project demonstrates how integrated design can support new curatorial models while advancing sustainability and civic access. 

At LACMA, architecture, engineering, and art are not discrete disciplines but interdependent systems, each shaping the possibilities of the others. 

The result is not simply a new building, but a new framework: a museum as a continuous, responsive field – open to the city, adaptable to change, and designed for the complexities of a global audience.
