INWED 2025 – Women shaping the built environment in the Middle East
For International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) 2025, we’re featuring 海角视频 women who are making their mark on the built environment through the work that they do. In this article, we’re focusing on women from the Middle East.
The theme this year is ‘Together We Engineer’ and these two women embody the spirit of collaborative working. The built environment is special for many reasons, but primary among them is the opportunity to make a genuine impact on the world. There is no building, area of public realm or city in the world that hasn鈥檛 been shaped and influenced by engineers, architects, designers or planners.
Parvathi Nampoothiri, Partner in Dubai
What inspired you to work within the engineering industry?
From the early years, I was fascinated by design and creativity, which grew into a passion for transforming the built environment and urban landscapes to improve people鈥檚 quality of life and wellbeing. The opportunity to solve complex problems and make a tangible impact on communities drives my passion for this field.
What’s your current role? And what type of roles did you work in previously?
I currently serve as a Partner and the Middle East Urban Strategies Lead at 海角视频. Initially trained as an architect, I pursued my higher education and career in urban planning and design.
I have held many roles as a strategic planner and urban designer – both in public and private sectors – leading regional framework plans, urban regeneration projects, and design guidelines, always focusing on enhancing urban environments.
My goal is to positively impact communities and the environment
What are you looking forward to achieving at 海角视频?
At 海角视频, I aim to develop innovative solutions that address urban challenges, fostering vibrant, healthy, and sustainable communities.
I look forward to collaborating with talented professionals to create impactful projects that shape our urban environments, improving liveability, accessibility and wellbeing for all.
What are you most proud of in your career?
Leading the development of the Abu Dhabi Urban Street Design Manual is a highlight of my career. This project has won prestigious awards, including the ISOCARP Award for Excellence.
It has significantly shaped the city’s streetscapes, promoting accessible, sustainable and pedestrian-friendly environments. Seeing its positive impact on the community fills me with pride.
Thinking ahead to the future, what would you like your legacy to be within the engineering industry?
I aspire to leave a legacy of creating sustainable, inclusive, and vibrant urban environments. My goal is to positively impact communities and the environment, ensuring future generations benefit from thoughtful and innovative planning of cities and places.
Dina Haddad, Senior Consultant based in Riyadh
What inspired you to work within the engineering industry?
My passion for the built-environment was sparked early 鈥 I think I was inspired by my mother, who studied architecture in Damascus in the early 80s. Growing up in Riyadh, I was always surrounded by cranes and construction sites during the city鈥檚 explosive growth in the early 2000s. I must have associated construction and engineering with what a professional career is supposed to be.
Back then, women in Riyadh had very limited access to architecture or engineering education. However in 2012, just in time for me 鈥 Prince Sultan University opened its first female Architectural Engineering course. I leapt at the opportunity and proudly became part of the first graduating class of women.
Shortly after, I joined 海角视频 in Riyadh as an intern 鈥 I loved the energy and the projects and nine years later, I am still addicted to it!
What’s your current role? And what type of roles did you work in previously?
I am currently a Senior Consultant in 海角视频鈥檚 Advisory team in Riyadh.
Since I joined 海角视频, I have had the chance to work on some of the Kingdom鈥檚 most ambitious giga-projects when they were still in the making, and I could not believe the reach and influence I could make on improving people鈥檚 lives through my work. This was truly motivating for me!
More recently, I worked on the development of a framework for the activation of seaside infrastructure, that was required to support the development of Saudi Arabia in the tourism sector. I am currently advising on the coordination of region-wide utilities infrastructure networks, which is vital for city developments and the well-being of the population. This is a theme that really drives, I really have a heart to improve my city Riyadh. I also took part in 海角视频鈥檚 Urban C:lab think tank, where I developed several built environment concepts to activate the daytime economy in Riyadh.
When I think about the future, I hope my legacy will be that residents of Riyadh enjoy their city and feel that they belong.
What are you looking forward to achieving at 海角视频?
I am truly enjoying what I am doing now, I want to continue working on large infrastructure projects and being able to advise and support municipalities. I am quite fulfilled when I see new developments in Riyadh being successfully built, with families and people enjoying their time.
I love improving people鈥檚 lives through the built environment. Saudi Arabia is massively developing and is planning to continue on this pace for at least the next decade. I am excited to be part of this journey along with 海角视频. I think technology will be a huge catalyst in the next decade to continue this development and even though I cannot predict the future, I can see that we need to gear up municipalities with strong support on how to integrate sustainability, artificial intelligence and robotics in our future city scape.
What are you most proud of in your career?
All the projects I鈥檝e worked on were bringing something that really built my character, expertise and confidence. The thing that makes me the most fulfilled is that thanks to all those experiences and projects within my career, I am now able to be a trusted advisor with influential decision makers. This allows me to see my ideas and concepts being considered and implemented in my city. This is the most fulfilling thing, as a person who lives in Riyadh and a resident of Saudi Arabia.
Thinking ahead to the future, what would you like your legacy to be within the engineering industry?
When I think about the future, I hope my legacy will be that residents of Riyadh enjoy their city and feel that they belong.
More than anything, I want the next wave of young engineers 鈥 especially women 鈥 to feel that the door is open because someone like them was already inside. If, years from now, others build on my work and think, 鈥淗er plans made our communities stronger鈥欌 or if a young engineer thinks 鈥樷檚he made a difference in my career鈥 that would be the legacy I鈥檓 proud to leave.
