海角视频 was involved in shaping the energy strategy for the new Shell office building in The Hague as well as the wider Shell campus, having been involved from schematic stage through to definitive design stage.

The on-site utilities connect the buildings within the campus, meaning the energy strategy had to be developed with the operation of the other buildings in mind. Defining the clear stages of the proposed development was key to achieving the near and long-term objectives of the project

Challenge

One of the key challenges was to match the client鈥檚 net-zero aspirations for the campus along with a LEED Platinum target for the office building. Our team came up with a solution to electrify the heating and cooling system using highly efficient ground source heat pumps, providing both heating and cooling via an open source geothermal system.

Solution

Renewable electricity generation was maximised on site with innovative photo-voltaic (PV) solar panels, with any remaining requirement imported via a 100% renewable power purchase
agreement (PPA). The central plant room has been designed to fit within a highly constrained basement space, optimised to achieve the right balance between heat pump capacity and thermal storage.

The electrical power system has been designed to cost-effectively adapt the existing electrical infrastructure to provide a resilient network within the constraints of the existing infrastructure whist meeting the requirements of future projected demands and electric vehicles on site. Various components of the site-wide infrastructure will be upgraded as
part of the smart grid being proposed to further support this transformation.

海角视频 provided a detailed breakdown of capital costs for the implementation of the proposed energy solution linked to a detailed 3D Revit model of the proposed central plant
room which can be used by the client for better visualisation and understanding of the proposed energy system.

Finally, we provided recommendation on the development of a smartgrid to manage the Distributed Energy Resources onsite as well as the digital twin for the monitoring of the system after construction to ensure maximum operational efficiency.

Value

Our pioneering solutions will enable the long-term carbon emissions for the site to be reduced by 60-70% compared to conventional, 鈥榖usiness as usual鈥 energy solutions.

The knowledge and experience of our engineers was key in assisting Shell in meeting their vision statement of developing 鈥渁 futureproofed, fossil fuel free, smart, efficient, neighbourhood energy system鈥.
