海角视频 helped North Carolina State University to ensure the James B. Hunt Jr. Library set a new benchmark for technologically-sophisticated collaborative learning spaces.
In 2013, North Carolina State University (NCSU) opened its new, state-of-the-art James B. Hunt Jr. Library on its Centennial Campus, a signature building that reflects NCSU鈥檚 vision as a preeminent technological research university.
Often referred to as a 鈥渓ibrary of the future,鈥 the LEED Silver certified Hunt Library won the prestigious AIA / ALA Library of the Year Award in 2013 and was named a 鈥淣ew Landmark Library鈥 by Library Journal in 2015.
Challenge
NC State wanted to build on successful precedents already on campus and create a new library that would be the intellectual and social heart of the university’s new Centennial Campus plan.
With their new library, the university sought to address the unique challenges of the 21st century research library, including being a place for dialogue and accommodating a diverse user base.

Solution
Elliot Felix led the vision and programming process while at DEGW. Then, in the years leading up to the Library’s opening in 2013, NCSU commissioned 海角视频, to develop the service, staffing and organizational strategy for its operations to be as innovative as its architecture.
In collaboration with architecture firms Sn酶hetta and Clark Nexsen, and cost consultants Davis Langdon, the 海角视频 advisory team developed the vision and space program based on a great deal of quantitative and qualitative research as well as lessons from precedents beyond libraries.
Together, our strategy and operating model design team and its collaborators developed a strategy to use a robotic storage and retrieval system for collections that freed up valuable space for students. The team also planned a variety of technology-rich learning spaces and a single, integrated service point.
We had a wonderful experience working with brightspot (now 海角视频). They helped us overcome challenges and stimulate thinking about alternative futures by being impartial experts, being good listeners and making everyone part of the process.
Susan Nutter, former Vice-Provost and Dean of Libraries, NC State University
