Since 2016, º£½ÇÊÓƵ has worked in close partnership with a live music client, providing strategic technical advice across a growing portfolio of live music venues throughout the UK. The relationship began with a focused inspection programme and has since evolved into a long-term collaboration that spans 22 venues.
These venues range from ornate Victorian theatres to contemporary arenas, each with its own operational demands and architectural character. Our role has been to help the client maintain and enhance these spaces, ensuring they remain safe, resilient and commercially viable. What started as a response to updated safety guidance around fibrous plaster ceilings has developed into a comprehensive advisory service, encompassing structural integrity, building envelope performance, ventilation, fire safety and operational optimisation.
This ongoing engagement reflects º£½ÇÊÓƵ’s commitment to understanding the client’s business model and delivering tailored, multidisciplinary solutions that support both heritage and performance.
Challenge
The client’s estate includes some of the most recognisable performance venues in the country. Many are listed buildings with decorative fibrous plaster ceilings dating back to the 1800s. These features, while visually striking, are inherently fragile and highly sensitive to moisture and structural movement.
The initial driver for our involvement was a significant ceiling collapse at the Apollo Theatre in London, which led to new industry guidance requiring regular inspections of fibrous plaster ceilings. The client recognised that a more holistic approach was needed. It was not enough to inspect the plasterwork alone. The wider building envelope, ventilation systems and structural supports all had to be considered to understand the full picture.
Each venue presented its own unique challenges. Some had suffered from years of water ingress, others required improvements to fire safety measures. In many cases, the buildings had been altered repeatedly over time, resulting in a complex layering of systems and materials. Operational constraints added further complexity. These are busy, revenue-generating venues with limited downtime, so any interventions had to be carefully planned and executed with minimal disruption.

Solution
º£½ÇÊÓƵ’s approach has been defined by collaboration, adaptability and technical rigour. From the outset, we worked closely with the client’s venue team to develop a bespoke inspection methodology that combined structural engineering, building surveying and specialist plasterwork expertise. This enabled us to assess the condition of ceilings, supporting structures and external envelopes, identifying risks and prioritising remedial works across the estate.
Our initial inspections spanned a diverse portfolio of venues, from ornate heritage buildings to contemporary performance spaces. These surveys provided a comprehensive understanding of each site’s condition and informed a strategic programme of works. In 2019, we returned to conduct a three-year review, ensuring that the estate remained compliant and resilient.
At one historic venue, we undertook a technical investigation of the ventilation systems, followed by a phased refurbishment to restore original plant and air paths. This was complemented by roof renewal and facade conservation works, preserving architectural character while improving performance.
Elsewhere, our team reconfigured external highways and pedestrian areas to enhance access and safety. We refurbished front-of-house spaces, relocated staff offices and carried out auditorium upgrades. Minor structural changes were proposed to improve crowd flow and increase safe occupancy, unlocking additional revenue potential.
In another location, we replaced the main auditorium roof and delivered a programme of conservation works to safeguard the building’s long-term integrity.

One venue presented a different set of challenges. Here, we replaced the auditorium roof, modernised ventilation systems and carried out crowd density and capacity analysis. We also reviewed fire and evacuation strategies and undertook facade preservation works to maintain visual appeal and compliance.
Remedial works to the roof were required at a large arena, alongside refurbishment of bar and VIP lounge areas. At another site, we focused on front-of-house improvements, including upgrades to ticketing areas and public spaces.
Across multiple venues, we provided fire engineering consultancy and strategy reviews. These interventions helped the client address critical safety concerns and improve evacuation procedures.
Each project has been tailored to the specific needs of the venue. In some cases, we have helped increase safe occupancy through minor structural changes. In others, we have reactivated original ventilation systems or restored historic features such as roof lanterns, avoiding the need for intrusive retrofits.
One flagship project exemplifies the evolution of this relationship. Initially asked to inspect the roof structure, we are now leading a major refurbishment that includes facade design, MEP upgrades, planning support and project management. This initiative has drawn in expertise from across º£½ÇÊÓƵ, demonstrating the value of our multidisciplinary capability.

Value
The true value of this project lies in the strength of the relationship between º£½ÇÊÓƵ and the client. We are not simply a consultant delivering isolated services. We are a trusted advisor, helping the client navigate complex technical challenges and make informed decisions about their estate.
Throughout, our focus has remained on strategic, cost-effective interventions that deliver maximum value, preserve heritage and support the client’s operational goals. By understanding the nuances of each venue and working in close partnership with the client, we have helped shape a resilient and future-ready estate.
Our multidisciplinary capability has been central to this. From structures and building serviced (MEP) to facades, fire, acoustics and planning, we have brought together the right expertise at the right time, enabling the client to respond quickly and effectively to emerging issues. We have helped the client forecast and manage capital expenditure, reduce operational risk, enhance visitor experience, preserve heritage and increase revenue.
What began as a regulatory compliance exercise has grown into a strategic asset management programme. It reflects º£½ÇÊÓƵ’s ability to deliver value across the full lifecycle of a building, and to support clients in achieving their operational and commercial goals.
