Transport and mobility

º£½ÇÊÓƵ was part of five planning teams advancing one of Germany’s largest urban expansion projects in a cooperative format.

An investigation is currently underway to establish whether and to what extent the city of Munich can be expanded in a livable manner around the Feldmoching quarter.

Challenge

The north of Munich offers development potential that is being examined in preparatory studies for a possible urban development measure in accordance with Building Codes. Only one part of the approximately 900-hectare study area is to be used for new construction. The city of Munich places importance on securing and further developing the uses, structures and functions of the green belt that characterise the district.

Five planning teams developed ideas for Munich’s North in a form of five-day open competition. Around 1,000 interested people participated in the ideas workshop: they observed the five planning teams at work, engaged in dialogue with them and were able to contribute their own potential ideas. Information stands about Munich’s North and the new urban development were also available at the event to enable discussions with experts.

The planning of Munich’s North involves several challenges, including the consideration of various restrictions based on twelve expert reports – including those on species protection, hydrology and climatology. Our mobility team had to find an economically viable and sustainable urban development strategy that meets the population’s needs and aligns with the expert reports.

Solution

Our vision for Munich’s North encompasses a holistic and sustainable urban development strategy that addresses the central challenges and opportunities of Munich’s North. The core focuses are water management, climate-resilient green spaces, and a harmonious integration of development and landscape. A central element is a blue-green recreational corridor, made accessible through active mobility. This involves upgrading the “Three Lakes Plateau” to the park mile of the future, creating new retention zones, and linking them with a continuous high-speed cycle route from the Olympic Park in the south to the LSG Schwarzhölzl in the north.

The vision includes careful expansions of the existing settlements in Feldmoching North, West, Fasanerie, and Ludwigsfeld. These are carried out through long-term curated development with clear priorities, in collaboration with the local population. Natural spatial concerns, climate-resilient transformation of existing quarters, and the regional water balance set the framework. This creates a seamless transition between new developments and the areas of the (productive) landscape, acting like a permeable “membrane” and enabling strong neighbourhood development from the quarter.

Value

º£½ÇÊÓƵ’s approach offers a comprehensive solution that reduces pressure on urban development while creating sustainable and economically viable mobility options. Citizen participation during the ideas workshop led to a concept that considers the needs and wishes of the population. The improved mobility solutions promote an environmentally friendly, accessible and liveable city.
