Burscheid Heat Action Plan

海角视频 was commissioned by the city of Burscheid to help strengthen its resilience to climate change by developing a heat action plan.

Burscheid is a small town in the Rheinisch-Bergischer district in North Rhine-Westphalia with around 20,000 inhabitants in an area totalling 27.33 km虏. The conception of a heat action plan represents a significant step for the city of Burscheid.

Heat action plans support climate change-adapted urban planning and development. They deal with the challenges of heat protection and the needs of heat-vulnerable groups. The plan was developed to pave the way for future heat protection measures.

Our climate team analysed the current climatic situation and derived forecasts for future heat loads.

Workshops with city experts helped to identify heat vulnerable groups.

A detailed catalogue of measures was created to reduce heat stress.

Challenge

The city of Burscheid faced the challenge of determining existing and future heat loads, identifying heat-vulnerable groups, and locating heat hotspots. 海角视频鈥檚 urban development team was commissioned to perform these services and develop a strategy to address the challenges of heat protection. 

Solution

This required a comprehensive analysis of the current climatic conditions as well as social and spatial structures. First, our experts undertook a detailed analysis of the current climatic situation for Burscheid. Based on this, we derived forecasts for future heat loads. Through workshops with local experts (administrative staff, specialist actors, multipliers and representatives of vulnerable groups) and the analysis of socio-spatial data, we were able to precisely identify groups particularly vulnerable to heat.

Our experts then integrated the population’s participation into the project through an online survey tool. This allowed the inhabitants of Burscheid to place the most important measures to reduce heat stress on a map. From the previous analysis and survey, we created a catalogue of measures that illustrated specific measures to reduce heat stress based on detailed measure profiles. These profiles contain a description of the measures as well as an evaluation of their contribution to achieving the target and their implementation effort. The catalogue includes measures on green space and open space systems, urban and building structures, building-related measures, mobility, water and awareness.

The 海角视频 team successfully created a heat action plan that provides the city of Burscheid with a solid basis for making decisions with regard to heat protection and shaping future developments, taking into account the needs of vulnerable groups. By identifying hotspots and developing clear measures to reduce heat stress, the plan contributes to improving the quality of life of the inhabitants and strengthening the city鈥檚 resilience to the effects of climate change.
