Pod in a nutshell: ‘Troubled Waters’ Sandbox Ep.01

From flooding in the winter to water shortages in the summer, it is clear that our current water management system in the UK is not efficient. The question is: What could the future of our water infrastructure look like? Our panel discussed this and more in our first episode of ‘Sandbox.’

Imagine a world where we manage our water resources efficiently, ensuring sustainability for future generations. From innovative rainwater harvesting techniques to addressing the critical issues of water leakage, this episode covered it all. Our experts brought fresh perspectives and actionable insights that can make a real difference in how we think about and use water.

Joining our regular host, Andy Duncan, were our own 海角视频 experts, Louise Clark, Associate, Water Management , Duncan Ker-Reid, Technical Director, Cities Water and special guest, Tom McNamara, Founder and Director of FreeUP, a clean tech start-up focused on making water quality sensing more affordable and accessible.

The key takeaways from this episode were as follows:

  • Water Usage and Loss: The U.K. uses around 14 billion litres of water daily, losing 3.71 billion litres through leaks. Fixing water shortages isn鈥檛 as straightforward as it seems due to quality and distribution challenges.
  • Repurposing Rainwater: Repurposing rainwater involves more than just catching it 鈥 quality and location matter. Sustainable drainage systems can mitigate flooding by directing excess water effectively.
  • Innovative Solutions: The Mayfield Park project in Manchester is a stellar example of using greenspaces to manage rainwater, reducing flood impacts downstream.
  • Two-Tier Water Systems: Utilising non-polluted grey water for irrigation and toilets can save drinking water for essential uses. Education is key to overcoming negative perceptions of grey water.
  • Scalable Rainwater Harvesting: Large operations, like stadiums, can harvest rainwater for non-drinking purposes, making significant strides in water conservation.

Our guests also shared their visions for the future of water infrastructure:

  • Louise Clark emphasised the need for legislation to mandate better water management practices in new developments.
  • Tom McNamara advocated for a shared understanding and responsibility in addressing water management issues.
  • Duncan Ker-Reid highlighted the increasing pressures of water availability due to climate change and urged individual efforts and advocacy.
