Jeddah Central Museum

Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

海角视频 is helping shape the vision and navigate the complex technical challenges of an ambitious project to transform a former desalination plant into a vibrant new cultural hub for Jeddah.

Jeddah Central Museum (formerly the Jeddah Institute of Making) will become a flagship cultural destination at the heart of the Jeddah Central regeneration scheme. Envisioned as an iconic landmark for the city, the museum will breathe new life into a decommissioned desalination plant, celebrating Jeddah鈥檚 rich history while reimagining the site as an inspiring centre for creativity, learning, and community activity.

Working in close collaboration with Heatherwick Studios and Jeddah Central Development Company (JCDC), 海角视频 was appointed to provide full engineering services on the development. We have worked hard to reuse as much of the existing buildings and materials on site, to repurpose them as part of the proposed museum buildings and landscaping.

Our scope covered the adaptive reuse of three main areas of the site 鈥 the former pump house, on the edge of the sea, which will be transformed into an entertainment and performance space, the expansive turbine hall, which is set to become the main exhibition space, which will be known as the 鈥淗all of Imagination鈥, and the Makers鈥 Souk, which is to be developed on the former desalination plant works between the two.

Jeddah has been a city of artists and makers for more than a thousand years and an engagement programme is underway with the existing creative community so they can actively help to shape the design. When completed, the project will deliver an exciting and enriching new cultural landmark.

In just 12 months, the team delivered an exceptional achievement, applying our adaptive re鈥憉se expertise to transform a highly complex industrial desalination plant into a renewed icon of the Jeddah skyline.

Drawing on our extensive in鈥慶ountry experience and deep knowledge of the KSA context, the team provided the technical and contextual foundation that enabled Heatherwick Studio to realise a vibrant new cultural hub, set to become a centrepiece of the new Jeddah Downtown development.
