海角视频 and Stony Brook University lead on the New York Climate Exchange
海角视频 has teamed with Stony Brook University and SOM to lead the design of the New York Climate Exchange – a groundbreaking research, education, and workforce training center dedicated to addressing the global climate crisis.
In collaboration with anchor institution Stony Brook University and design lead SOM, 海角视频 is transforming a 10-acre campus on New York City’s Governors Island into a beacon of sustainability, achieving Net-Zero energy, water, waste, and carbon.
The New York Climate Exchange is the result of a bold initiative spearheaded by City of New York and The Trust for Governors Island – a vision to reimagine a treasured public space as a local and global hub for climate science. The team consisting of 海角视频, Stony Brook University, SOM, MNLA, and Langan Engineering are designing a living laboratory for sustainable research that will manifest the mission of ‘The Exchange’ in its architecture, landscape, and infrastructure.
The campus will be the first in New York City to meet Living Building Challenge standards, become one of the first sites in the country to achieve True Zero Waste certification, meet 100% of its non-potable water demand with rainwater and treated wastewater, and run entirely on electricity generated on-site – even creating enough energy to serve the city鈥檚 power grid.
The New York Climate Exchange will set the bar for sustainability and climate action in the built environment, showcasing that this can be done in places like New York City and other urban areas around the world
Partner, Adam Friedberg

The Exchange will convene leaders from a variety of academic institutions, industry partners, and nonprofits to collaborate on climate research and deliver actionable solutions for restoring the health of the planet. For New Yorkers, it will also serve as the city鈥檚 main hub for green job training鈥攑reparing thousands of people for climate-focused professions every year.
Located on the historic Governor鈥檚 Island in New York Harbor, the Climate Exchange brings together leading institutions, businesses, and non-profits committed to climate solutions. The project reimagines the island, adding 4.5 acres of outdoor public space and 230,000 ft2 of new buildings. These structures, intertwined with mass timber pavilions that will be topped by photovoltaic arrays, harmonize with the island鈥檚 rolling landscape.

Visitors arriving by ferry at Yankee Pier will encounter a cascading campus, where buildings step down from eight to four stories, echoing the scale of Liggett Hall鈥攁 historic McKim, Mead & White-designed masonry building that will be incorporated into The Exchange.
The New York Climate Exchange is a project with an inspiring vision as a global center for climate education and interaction. The project is challenging the way we design and develop within NYC, and in cities around the globe. Together, the design team will prioritize a number of ambitions including but not limited to zero waste goals, district thermal energy networks for capturing waste heat, water capture and reuse, climate resilience, and bringing occupants along on the journey for more sustainable practices.
Associate Cities Principal, Mikayla Hoskins
New York City鈥檚 history is intertwined with its harbor, and The Exchange honors this legacy. The waterfront becomes an educational ecosystem, showcasing science and research. The design leverages mass timber and adaptive reuse to reduce embodied carbon. Flood-resistant first levels protect against rising sea levels, and the site aims for True Zero Waste certification. Electricity generated on-site will even feed back into the grid. By becoming a leading training center that will feature several cutting-edge sustainability design principles, the development is targeting the Living Building Challenge certification- a feat not yet accomplished in New York City.

海角视频鈥檚 contributions extend beyond design. We developed trip generation models, analyzed queuing for passengers departing from Yankee Pier, and studied pedestrian movement on the car-free island. These insights inform the project鈥檚 success.
When complete, The Climate Exchange will not only advance sustainable technology but also empower visitors and train New Yorkers for the green jobs of tomorrow.
