海角视频 to make Greece’s tallest building a safe and sustainable landmark

海角视频 is providing multidisciplinary engineering expertise for one of the Mediterranean鈥檚 landmark developments.

Marina Tower, which is to be built in the Agios Kosmas Marina area in Athens, will be the tallest building in the country and the tallest green beachfront high-rise building in the whole of the Mediterranean.

Designed by architects Foster + Partners, the tower will be the first landmark to take shape at The Ellinikon urban development project, an ambitious regeneration scheme for the Greek capital鈥檚 former airport site. The 鈧8bn masterplan includes creating a world-class Metropolitan Park covering an area of 2,000,000m2 and extensive enhancement of the coastal front.

This emphasis on green regeneration will be showcased in the , which features distinctive 鈥榟anging gardens鈥, with abundant green spaces and water features, natural light and unobstructed sea views.

海角视频 is working alongside on the project, across a broad range of engineering disciplines, ensuring the building鈥檚 green design approach translates into its credentials as a landmark building for sustainability-focused living.

Our teams are also working to ensure the structure is resilient to the region鈥檚 seismic activity, while creating a building that will act as a benchmark for fire safety in the region.

The building was chosen through a design competition run by Lamda Development, the owners of the site. Kostis Lysikatos, associate director at 海角视频, says the design proved a hit with the judging panel.

鈥淭hey loved the scheme because of the greenery,鈥 he says. 鈥淚t was not a typical high-rise building. It fitted their brief for a luxury high-rise building which blends with the Athenian lifestyle, which is all about celebrating outdoor living.鈥

The building will house 200 apartments on 45 floors. The design connects what is effectively two towers with a spine composed of high-rise gardens and infinity swimming pools alternating on each of the floors.

The building鈥檚 landmark biophilic design is one of the key elements of the focus on the ongoing wellbeing of residents, which also includes uninterrupted views of the natural environment from every apartment.

The spine of green spaces running up the entire height of the building will also help to maintain airflow around the apartments, creating a cooling microclimate for residents.

The structural design also plays a key part in the sustainable strategy of the project through the clever use of materials that lower the building鈥檚 embodied carbon footprint. The highly energy efficient building, designed to meet the client鈥檚 ambition of achieving LEED Gold accreditation, will be 30% more energy efficient than the average new build construction in the country.

Sustainability has been factored into the irrigation of the structure鈥檚 many green spaces, with a system designed to recycle much of the water used to hydrate the building鈥檚 many plants. This will reduce the irrigation water demand by at least 50%. The use of drought hardy native species will also further reduce irrigation demands.

Our experts are focusing on reducing the urban heat island effect by using low emissivity reflective material and by the omission of large surface parking areas. Residents will park vehicles in an underground garage fitted with an electric vehicle charging point for each apartment. Full SMART home controls will also support residents to control their own carbon footprint.

On completion 鈥 within the next five years 鈥 it will be one of the six tall buildings to be developed at The Ellinikon and a benchmark for sustainable living in the city.
