A new era at LAX as MSC South opens with modular breakthrough

LAX’s newest addition, the Midfield Satellite Concourse South (MSC South), is now open – showcasing modular innovation.

Press release issued by Los Angeles World Airports.

(LAWA) announced on October 20th the upcoming closure of Terminal 5 for its complete demolition to deliver a brand-new terminal and airport experience, with anticipated reopening scheduled just before the and Paralympic Games. Terminal 5 airlines will relocate operations in phases which began Tuesday, October 21st, with full closure going into effect on Tuesday, October 28th.

“As we take this important step toward transforming LAX, the closure of Terminal 5 marks a pivotal moment in our journey to deliver a world-class airport experience,” said Doug Webster, Chief Airport Operations and Maintenance Officer, Los Angeles World Airports.

The newly-completed Midfield Satellite Concourse South (MSC South) — an extension of the West Gates at Tom Bradley International Terminal — along with other existing terminals will help ensure continued operations for passengers and flights currently using Terminal 5.

MSC South opened to the public on October 21st, adding over 150,000ft2 and eight gates to LAX’s footprint. The project, which utilized the Offsite Construction and Relocation (OCR) technique, was delivered on time and on budget. The innovative and adaptive OCR technique will also be used to achieve the project schedule for the new Terminal 5.

While smaller than other LAX projects, MSC South is playing a vital role in the airport’s development plan, the offsite construction and relocation (OCR) process was delivered on time and on budget, ensuing a smooth decant was possible from Terminal 5 and offering a flexible concourse for future phasing at the airport through 2028 and beyond.

º£½ÇÊÓƵ worked closely with architects Woods Bagot to design and plan the new Midfield Satellite Concourse (MSC) South at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), with a segmented delivery solution that minimizes disruption to the neighboring taxiways. The design team’s pre-engineered, off-site construction approach creates an efficient and highly sustainable terminal for both passengers and airport operators alike. The MSC South project is part of a larger phased plan at LAX that aims to create a modernized and efficient suite of terminals.

Our goal is to minimize disruption during this transition, and we are working closely with our airline partners to ensure continued operations and smooth travel for our passengers.

Until the new Terminal 5 opens, check-in and ticketing activities will have the following changes:

  • JetBlue will operate out of Terminal 1, beginning October 21
  • Spirit Airlines will operate out of Terminal 2, beginning October 22
  • American Airlines will operate out of Terminal 4, beginning October 28

The closure of Terminal 5 and the opening of MSC South are part of LAWA’s mission to transform the airport experience for employees and guests. This vision builds other critical investments at the airport such as terminal upgrades and wayfinding — all of which are part of LAX’s $30 billion Capital Improvement Program.
