Circular economy

Helping to protect and enhance our environment for future generations

Transitioning towards a circular economy is a significant undertaking. The process involves reducing resource consumption, prioritizing the reuse of existing materials, eliminating waste and pollution, and regenerating natural systems. The approach to achieving these goals needs to be tailored to each community or organisation.

With half of total greenhouse gas emissions and more than 90% of biodiversity loss and water stress resulting from resource extraction and processing, the transition to a circular economy is a critical part of tackling global environmental challenges.

As well as environmental benefits, circular economy solutions can strengthen competitiveness through supply chain cooperation, product and process innovation, technology adoption, and unlocking new skills and opportunities for employment.

º£½ÇÊÓƵ can mobilise expertise across economic sectors, environmental systems and resource flows. Our multidisciplinary team will work with you to understand the dynamics in play, understand the value at stake, identify key sustainability and environmental issues, and then identify the key levers and opportunities to tackle problems. We develop strategic circular objectives and tangible actions to reduce waste and prioritise and encourage the reuse and recovery of materials.

Circular economy strategic consulting and advisory services

We support governments, cities and businesses in identifying the most promising opportunities at national and urban scales to help meet and deliver economic, climate and sustainability goals.

Our approach begins with systemic mapping to identify where the most significant resource efficiency gains could be made across economic sectors and resource flows. This includes waste and materials, water and energy, and assessing the environmental and ecological implications of current behaviours.

We then consider opportunities for improving circularity through our lifecycle review process to understand potential intervention options, and economic and financial analysis to understand the costs and benefits of action. This process optimises existing systems and flows, but also considers potential new innovations and opportunities.

We consider a range of options for potential technological interventions and the institutional, regulatory and business process enablers relevant to achieve effective, joined-up solutions at pre-feasibility or feasibility level.

Programme and project definition is supported by value chain analysis and business case formulation, as well as the financial and economic appraisal required to finalise techno-economic feasibility and raise finance.

Project highlights

Circular Economy Statements – urban regeneration (cluster)

Greater London, UK

Since 2020, we have been developing our capability to deliver Circular Economy Statements, which form an increasingly vital component of planning submissions made to the Greater London Authority. We have delivered dozens of reports across a variety of projects, supporting successful developments across the capital.

The GLA’s requirement set a precedent for circular economy frameworks in urban developments, and we are advocating a similar approach across a variety of sectors and geographies, looking at the strategic approach, design ethos and materiality of projects.

We have developed a deep understanding of the GLA’s requirements and help clients to understand what is required, what can be achieved in line with programme, and what the benefits are of taking a circular economy approach.

Circular and resilient tourism for island nations – international development

Cabo Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe, and The Gambia

º£½ÇÊÓƵ was appointed by the World Bank to assess investment opportunities to increase circularity and resilience in the economies of Cabo Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe, and The Gambia.

We analysed the infrastructure of each country, conducting environmentally extended economic modelling to identify sector synergies (including the tourism sector) and circularity opportunities for waste, water and energy systems.

After extensive stakeholder engagement and analysis, potential initiatives ranged from strengthening links between local agriculture and hospitality, to the creation of construction materials from waste products and energy micro-generation in rural areas. We then developed business cases to help inform the client’s final investment decisions.
