Higher education consulting

Experts from 海角视频鈥檚 higher education advisory team (formerly brightspot Strategy), supported the University of Virginia (UVA) to realize its vision for a new kind of learning environment focused on student and staff wellbeing and mental health.

The Contemplative Commons is a dynamic complex of spaces designed to foster organic exploration of new ways of learning and experiencing the world as student participate in workshops, classes, events, and retreats. Light-filled indoor spaces, integrated outdoor areas, and art installations inspired by nature promote immersive experiences and afford opportunities for contemplative practice for students and the wider university community.

The facility鈥檚 purpose is to enable 鈥渟tudent flourishing鈥 through a host of indoor-outdoor spaces, academic classrooms, immersive learning and event spaces, incorporating art installations and flexible studios that can be configured as classrooms, research labs, meditation spaces, or even yoga studios.

Challenge

Supported in part by a donation from alumnus Paul Tudor Jones and his wife Sonia, the aspiration for the Contemplative Commons was to create a center of gravity for contemplative practices. At the heart of the new development, the Contemplative Sciences Center creates student opportunities at the Commons, focused on mind-body practices, integrating evidence-based programming designed to cultivate resilience, expand awareness, and foster meaningful connections.

A team of experts from higher education consultancy brightspot Strategy was engaged in 2016 to develop a program and feasibility study. The consultancy has since become part of 海角视频.

The objective of the study was to create a vision, program, and feasibility design study for the Contemplative Commons that aligns site, budget, and program considerations in a compelling concept suitable for further development. Comprehensive visioning discussions would need to be undertaken with stakeholders across the university, to ensure the development truly reflects the aspirations of all parties and maximized the opportunities presented by the building. The findings of this pan-university conversation, alongside a deep understanding of the goals of the Contemplative Science Center, needed to be reflected in the spatial design for the new facility.

Solution

The project team collaborated with a broad range of stakeholders to finalize the vision, develop the program, and test design feasibility to generate different options and resolve major scope questions so the University could select one scope/budget/design option for development in the Schematic Design phase.

Through an iterative process, UVA and the design team engaged with a diverse group of university stakeholders. This included a steering committee responsible for decision鈥憁aking and a working group focused on developing content for the programming and design process. They also held focus groups to gather input on the building鈥檚 unique programmatic elements. In addition, the team met with partners who will host events and programmes within the space. Broader feedback was also collected from faculty, staff, researchers, and students. These workshops, focus groups, student sessions and interviews with stakeholders informed the project team鈥檚 understanding of contemplative sciences and pan-university needs, and provided input to finalize the vision for the Contemplative Commons, envision and define the future user experience, and develop a list of space needs.

The study identified that, as a pan-university environment, the Commons will increase cross-school, cross-program interaction, facilitating exchange and stimulating thinking across different disciplines at UVA. It will support transformative learning, which is inhibited by traditional classrooms, by creating a setting for active, engaged learning for both small seminars and large classes. In addition to enriching the in-classroom experience, the Commons will introduce an opportunity to bridge academic and residential life, establishing a connection between the classroom and student life through co-curricular programming, and providing an environment for immersive retreats for students, faculty, staff and visitors.

Alongside curricular and co-curricular programming, ongoing observation and data collection will occur throughout the building, generating a rare opportunity for in-context research, complemented by a suite of spaces to support researchers鈥 on-site work and collaboration so that the Commons can function as a true 鈥渓iving laboratory.鈥 Our experts worked closely with architects Aidlin Darling Design, VMDO Architects, Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects, to develop a series of spaces that fully reflect the aspirations of the project and enable a truly contemplative space for learning and multidisciplinary collaboration. The connection to nature is at the forefront of the design, with natural daylighting, sightlines to the surrounding landscape, and biophilic materials, such as timber utilized throughout.

Value

The Contemplative Commons, which opened to students in spring 2025, delivers a carefully curated space for the holistic enrichment of the student experience, supporting mental wellbeing and mindfulness, and encouraging new approaches to research and teaching. Our team played a key role in helping to shape this unique vision.

The Contemplative Sciences Center works on initiatives that combine contemplative and experiential learning as well as conducting multidisciplinary research across the University including the Environmental Institute, The Department of Music, Anaesthesiology, Architecture, Religious Studies, Engineering, and Psychology. This multidisciplinary approach enables 鈥渃ontemplative learning鈥 as deeply experiential and connected to the natural world.
