The first new secondary school in Cambridge for many years, Trumpington Community College set high aspirations for design and sustainability, supporting the overall Great Kneighton (Clay Farm) neighbourhood development to the south of the city.
Challenge
Recognising the importance of the environmental agenda in education and also in ensuring students learn in high quality conditions that are resilient to the impacts of climate change and have minimal carbon emissions, the school appointed 海角视频 as 鈥渆nvironmental client design advisors鈥 鈥 delivering a peer review of the architectural and engineering designs. This allowed us to bring the expertise from our own design work as well as guidance from bodies such as CABE, the DfE and CIBSE to ensure that this school would deliver excellent environmental performance for the coming decades.

Solution
The concept for the school is based on a simple external building form, maximising environmental performance and simplifying construction, while providing a daylit and naturally ventilated atrium which houses open-plan content creation zones and is surrounded by classrooms. The complex roof form elegantly integrates photovoltaic panels with north-lights, which provide the necessary controlled daylight for the open learning areas whilst providing sufficient surfaces to incorporate acoustic absorption.
Our role included reviewing the architectural and engineering design proposals, suggesting areas for improvement, introducing innovative technologies, and giving the client the reassurance that their new facilities would provide the best possible outcomes within tight construction budgets.
A key part of this was engagement with the school鈥檚 team to provide guidance on operation and on minimisation of running costs. The project has won many awards and achieved a BREEAM 鈥淓xcellent鈥 rating. It was also delivered with compliance to BIM Level 2 and Soft Landings.

Value
Providing a design review role across all environmental aspects gave the client the reassurance to know the design team had not missed any opportunities to make Trumpington Community College a truly outstanding educational environment, playing its part both in climate change mitigation and adaptation for the next generation of students.
