Facade engineering

The historic city of Xi鈥檃n, in China鈥檚 Shaanxi Province, once known as Chang鈥榓n (Eternal Peace), marked the eastern end of the Silk Road and was home to the ruling houses of the Zhou, Qin, Han and Tang dynasties.

This ancient city is set to see a new landmark take shape, which takes its influence from the surrounding landscape of central China. The Jinghe New City International Culture & Art Centre will take the form of a series of meandering structures, landscape footbridge and outdoor areas used for cultural and recreational activities. The curved forms were designed by Zaha Hadid Architects as a reference to the Jinghe River and the mountain valleys it has carved out in the area.

Challenge

Today the historic city is a growing hub for the energy, materials, artificial intelligence and aerospace industries. Jinghe New City International Culture & Art Centre will form part of a masterplan for redeveloping the area. Accessed by gently sloping ramps, the building will also help to connect the city鈥檚 commercial and residential districts to the north with recreational areas and parkland to the south.

海角视频 has been engaged to provide expert advisory services for both the side facades and the specialist structural systems of the double-curving roof, which spans an eight-lane highway at its mid-point. The specialist structural scope also includes elements of the south pavilion library, north pavilion art centre and connection bridge facade system.

The new landmark building will house a multimedia library and flexible performing arts theatre, alongside multifunctional halls, studios, education and supportive retail. The section that spans the road will include landscape footbridge, elevated gardens and paths.

The multimedia library will incorporate spaces for both traditional print publications as well as virtual reality technologies. There will also be a series of cascading platform that look out over a skylit atrium and are dotted with a mix of private and shared reading and research areas.

The performing arts theatre, which will have a capacity of 1,000 people, has been designed to adapt to a variety of events. It will share its public areas with the education, studios, and temporary exhibitions, which are planned around the theatre to help with accessibility and encourage collaboration. The structures and glass curtain wall facades will need to be designed within the seismic tolerances required for the region.

Solution

The architect is leading on the geometric modelling of the elegant curving contours of the building, with our facades and specialist structures experts working closely with the design team on realising the vision for the exterior. The roof structure will stand alone, over-spanning the core building structures.

The roof itself will be comprised of eye-catching aluminium honeycomb panels, while the side facades will be dominated by large expanses of glass. The finite orientation of each glass panel will need to be carefully planned in order to ensure the smooth undulations are successfully achieved and the interior insulation is maximised.

The facade system will be designed to support its own weight and transmit the load back to the supporting structure without any reduction in performance.

As well as taking a leading role on the development of the glazing system and roof, the 海角视频 team will also be working closely with the wider design team on complex elements such as a balcony that sits neatly within the curvature of the roof, as well as a skylight system that runs for the length of the roof鈥檚 apex. Measures to reduce energy consumption include optimising natural ventilation and light, as well as prioritising local materials. The centre will also use photovoltaic panels to generate electricity on-site and incorporate facilities for rainwater collection and harvesting. The project is targeting a three-star certification in China鈥檚 Green Building programme.

Value

Our team of facades and specialist structures experts bring a broad experience of working with collaborators on complex, geometrically-challenging buildings, with 海角视频 previously working on landmark schemes such as Morpheus at Macau, Zhuhai Hengqin International Finance Centre, Guangzhou Nansha International Cruise Terminal and Guangzhou Infinitus Plaza. Our teams will work closely alongside the wider design team to ensure the vision for Jinghe New City Culture & Art Centre is realised in the most efficient and impactful way, creating a vibrant new landmark for the city.
