Pod in a nutshell: ‘Urban Wonderlands – Grey or Green?’ Sandbox Ep.02
In Episode Two of ‘Sandbox’ – ‘Urban Wonderlands: Grey or Green?’, our guests explored the evolution of the urban landscape in our UK cities, and why it is so important.
Examining city parks and other green spaces, the panel discussed why biophilia and biophilic design is key for urban development and assisting in addressing the climate crisis. The discussion delved into why BNG is critical for our planet and also for human wellbeing. Our guests also suggested ways in which we, as individuals, can ‘do our bit’ in implementing more ‘green’ into our day-to-day lives.
Joining our regular host Andy Duncan in this episode were guests Tamsin Westhorpe, RHS judge, horticulturist and leading figure in garden media, our Ƶ experts, Aaron Grainger, who leads our UK Nature and Biodiversity Team, and Colin Byrne, Partner, Cities Regional Development.

The key takeaways from this episode were as follows:
Urbanisation Challenges: Increased urbanisation has led to a loss of green spaces. Suburban commutes and population growth drive this trend.
Importance of Green Spaces: Tamsin highlighted that accessible green spaces improve mental health, behaviour, and overall quality of life.
Biodiversity Net Gain Policy (BNG): This policy mandates that developers leave nature in a 10% better state post-development, crucial for combating biodiversity loss and climate change.
Urban Heat Islands: Built environments like concrete and asphalt increase temperatures, impacting urban living conditions.
Engineering Solutions: Aaron and Colin discussed how engineering can help re-green cities, emphasising the role of Ƶ in these initiatives.
Future Vision: Educational Integration: Tamsin expressed the hope that children will learn about environmental horticulture in schools.
Green Urban Design: Colin envisioned cities designed for both immediate and long-term environmental benefits.
Policy Effectiveness: Aaron stressed the need for well-managed policies to ensure sustainable urban greening.
