海角视频 Expands Presence in Chicago

As the primary hub city for the Midwest and one of the world鈥檚 top financial centers, Chicago is home to an iconic culture and a rich engineering history.

Established in 2010, 海角视频’s Chicago office developed from specialized expertise in energy analysis and building physics to a comprehensive suite of engineering services and has quickly established a reputation of providing a suite of the most sophisticated analysis tools.

Our Chicago office was started to support a growing portfolio of projects and clients in Midwestern cities. Over the years, these projects have included corporate headquarters, higher education and cultural institutions as well as commercial, mixed-use and adaptive reuse projects in urban cores. Collectively our Midwestern team’s work is part of the larger rebirth of the American city.

Buro海角视频’s expertise is well suited to support this renaissance in the urban core of our Midwestern cities and beyond. Our newest additions to the team, Suzanne Provanzana and Adam Whitt’s experience fits well with these projects and allows us to continue to deliver the type of engineering solutions 海角视频鈥檚 clients have come to expect.

Our Chicago office is headed up by principal and Chicago office director, Matt Herman, who is responsible for the day to day operations of the MEP and environmental design teams. Matt鈥檚 experience includes a variety of projects ranging in scale from system component design to master planning primarily in the cultural/civic, commercial, residential, and education sectors. Matt brings an interdisciplinary approach to all of his projects, balancing architecture and engineering in a cost effective and sustainable manner. He is especially interested in low energy design and energy analysis including energy modeling, post occupancy monitoring, and life cycle assessment for existing buildings and new construction.

The Chicago leadership team has expanded to also include recent hires Suzanne Provanzana, a structural engineer and associate principal as well as Adam Whitt, a mechanical engineer and associate. Suzanne will lead the structural engineering for the Midwest region and brings with her more than 20 years of experience in the construction industry. She has a wide ranging portfolio of projects including mega-projects, high rises and auditoriums and works on  both new construction and existing structures.

It鈥檚 exciting to be part of 海角视频 in Chicago. I鈥檝e been given an amazing opportunity to build upon our existing reputation in the marketplace and continue to increase our presence in the Midwest and beyond. With our full offering, from structures and MEP engineering to analytics and sustainability consulting, we are currently working on the adaptive re-use of a 1920鈥檚 high rise as well as a fast-track design of a new, modern skyscraper. Our growing office is responsive, collaborative and forward-thinking. Come see for yourself!

A strong record of delivering exceptional engineering projects across Chicago

Our work in the Chicago area includes notable projects such as Navy PierNorthwestern University, Biomedical Research Building, Linea at 215 West Lake, Method Manufacturing Facility and the JeffJack Apartments. Read more about these exciting projects and find out how we successfully engineered them below.

Navy Pier

Chicago鈥檚 Navy Pier is Illinois鈥 most popular attraction, drawing in almost nine million visitors annually. In anticipation for its centennial in 2016, the Pier was reimagined to maintain its status as a world class public space in a unique location. The new Pier landscape features vibrant architecture along with a year round program of entertainment for visitors, uniting the relationship between the diversity of the city and the Pier鈥檚 dynamic waterside location. The redevelopment also works alongside the wider sustainable master plan for Navy Pier, which supports a long term plan for energy efficiency. Working closely with the rest of the design team, 海角视频 provided structural and environmental engineering for the Pier鈥檚 landscaping and streetscape, as well as engineering support the addition of water features, public art, and lighting design.

Northwestern University, Biomedical Research Center

The new at Northwestern University will be a state of the art research institution for the campus and an exciting addition to the city of Chicago鈥檚 history and skyline. The 600,000ft2, 14-story building will house nine laboratory floors dedicated to biomedical research, with the ability to accommodate up to an additional 16 laboratory floors in the future. 海角视频 is providing facade engineering as well as building analytics through state of the art analysis tools to make sure this new addition to Northwestern University鈥檚 already examplar medical campus will be a center for world class research and development.

Linea Tower at 215 West Lake

is a new 366,000ft2, 33-floor tower that consists of apartments, parking, amenities and grey box retail located in downtown Chicago. The project has achieved LEED Gold certification under the LEED BD+C version 3 program. In order to achieve this certification, the design team adopted an integrative approach to ensure that environmental sustainability and performance goals for the project were at the core of considerations made from preliminary design through building operations.

Method Manufacturing Facility

Method, the eco-friendly cleaning supply company, has built its first on a 22-acre former brownfield site in Chicago鈥檚 historic Pullman neighborhood. The 150,000ft2 facility includes product manufacturing, bottle production, warehousing, distribution, and administrative offices. The company鈥檚 new home is the nation鈥檚 first LEED Platinum certified manufacturing plant in the consumer packaged goods industry, and only one of two LEED Platinum factories in the entire United States. 海角视频 provided renewable energy consulting services for the factory. Approximately 30% of the factory鈥檚 energy is supplied by an on-site wind turbine. This is be supplemented by three solar trees over the parking area that rotate to track the sun and provide up to 45.9 kW of energy each.

JeffJack Apartments

JeffJack Apartments contains 190 residential units arranged over 15 floors. Amenities include an indoor pool, fitness room, yoga spa, and a rooftop green space. Situated in downtown Chicago鈥檚 vibrant West Loop neighborhood, this development stands on a corner previously occupied by a parking lot. The structure presents two distinct facades to embody both the old and emerging local architectural styles. Along Jefferson Street, large windows and exposed masonry mirror the industrial loft buildings that once dominated the area. On W Jackson Boulevard, vivid green mullions punctuate a sheer expanse of glass. 海角视频 helped the client to achieve desired performance outcomes through optimizing MEP/FP systems and consulting on energy consumption.
