Event Recap: The Venue Experience – Optimising Sound and Atmosphere

This autumn 海角视频 held a , hosted by , to look at how acoustics are vital to the success of a venue; for both owners and operators, as well as end users, audience and performers.

In music performance spaces and venues, the acoustics ARE the experience. When designing the acoustic engineering on performance venues, the central focus should be on creating a 鈥渄estination venue鈥 and providing gig-goers with an unforgettable experience where they are blown away by the incredible sound of their favourite artists.

Panellists from 海角视频 and Vanguardia, (a 海角视频 company), discussed in depth –

  • Key aspects of acoustic and sound system design
  • Examples of optimising acoustics to maximise experience for all
  • Cutting edge audio-visual technology to optimise engagement & revenue generation

Speakers

  • Jim Griffiths, Co-founder Vanguardia, Director, Acoustics & AV
  • Ben Burgess, Director, Acoustics & AV
  • Daryl Prasad, Director, Acoustics & AV

Guest Speaker

Joe O’Herlihy, Sound Engineer, U2

Joe O鈥橦erlihy has been U2鈥檚 sound engineer for over four decades. In the webinar, he gave his insights, from a performers point of view, about the critical importance of excellent acoustics for a venue that artists want to return to again and again. Joe has worked regularly with Vanguardia on the design of many incredible arenas and venues.

He particularly emphasised the importance of considering the end-user when designing a venue鈥檚 sound. Some venues are very difficult for artists to play as the sound and acoustics are not designed for performances or music concerts, and are instead designed mostly for sporting events, for example. Joe explained that once a venue has then been designed to be multipurpose it is a much better experience for the artist and for the audience.

What did we learn?

Immersive audio and visual experiences in venues.

There is a growing trend to push the boundaries in venues to create immersive experiences. Spatial and object-oriented audio has been around since the 1970s. We are now seeing these gain significant traction in venues. Combined with 360-degree LED displays we are now seeing the next-generation of venues, specially designed for the audience experience.

Acoustic phenomena and considerations for design.

The enjoyment and experience of incredible performances are inextricably linked to acoustics. Indeed, in music venues, the sound is the experience and the acoustic design can make the difference between stunned audiences and negative online reviews. We design the structure to keep unwanted sound out, and the sound from the performance in, and we tune the internal finishes to make it sing.

The science of engineering atmosphere is our speciality.

The U2 Experience

海角视频 and Vanguardia (a 海角视频 company) work with end users of facilities to fully understand the varied operational requirements of a space.

This has significant relevance to sound, acoustics and any environmental noise. All aspects are inter-related. We work regularly with Joe O鈥橦erlihy, to provide specialist advice for the venue’s requirements for 鈥榣ive鈥 shows from a performer鈥檚 point of view. When designing a multi-use facility, the acoustics and sound must be considered for both sporting events and music production.

鈥淚t’s so important that you have the end users, the audience and performers perspectives in mind. The vital ingredient is to please the artist, the importance of acoustic design and treatment makes all the difference for an artist going on stage in a proper acoustic environment and getting the best out of the arena. 鈥
