Decarbonization consulting

A more sustainable future is possible. Find out how.

The imperative to decarbonize all sectors of our economy is clear, and in doing so we also have the opportunity to reduce operating costs, mitigate risk, increase investment, attract top tenants and talent, and ultimately establish carbon goals that account for our impact on the environment, human health and equity, and the economy.

º£½ÇÊÓƵ is at the forefront of driving a strategic and tactical approach to decarbonization – from planning and strategy to implementation and reporting. In addition to working with clients like Empire State Realty Trust, the US State Department, NBCUniversal, and Harvard Medical School, we have embarked on a decarbonization journey for our own practice, with an annual Global Sustainability Report (2019-present) and science-based targets aligned to SBTi and validated in 2021.

º£½ÇÊÓƵ’s leadership also extends into our role leading, guiding and engaging with organizations like C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, Science Based Targets (SBT), Urban Land Institute (ULI), Carbon Leadership Forum (CLF), and GSA’s Green Building Advisory Committee.

Our decades of experience across sectors and scales around the world allows our teams to access global best practices as well as local lessons learned to move nimbly from assessment and decarbonization planning to action.

Our sector focus

Corporate

Decarb plans and strategies are typically aligned to corporate ESG goals as well as the development of scenarios that illustrate how emissions reductions can be achieved over time with associated costs.

Projects could include net zero plans, carbon reduction roadmaps, deep energy retrofits, supply chain and procurement strategies, and reporting aligned to ESG and other disclosures.

We work with clients in the media and entertainment industry, technology sector, and corporate clients such as WATG.

Commercial real estate

Our strategy and plans are generally aligned to portfolio-wide goals, local regulatory context and focus on reducing operating costs and optimizing long term asset value.

Projects could range from capital and tax credit planning and building electrification, to renewable energy procurement and offset strategies, and reporting aligned to local benchmarking standards (e.g. LL97, BERDO).

Clients include: Empire State Realty Trust (ESRT) and the Empire State Building, Longfellow Real Estate Partners, WS Development, Alexandria Real Estate (ARE), Hines, Harrison Street Capital

Campus

At the scale of a campus and district systems, our decarbonization strategy and net zero planning is aligned to long term strategic plans, capital planning and asset renewals and net zero targets.

Projects could include space utilization and programming shifts, electrification, design and construction standards, and renewable energy projects, and reporting against WRI GHG protocol and custom dashboards.

Clients include: Harvard Medical School, Northwestern, University of North Carolina, Case Western, Dartmouth, University of Southern California, and private corporate campus environments.

Public sector

Within the public sector, our work is aligned to the organizational goals, and City and State mandates, supporting broad greenhouse gas adaptation and mitigation strategies.

Projects could include policy development, building characterization studies, resilience planning, and energy transition planning along with implementation of building electrification and city-wide EV fleet transition.

Clients include: the US State Department OBO, the General º£½ÇÊÓƵ Administration (GSA), New York City, the County and City of Los Angeles, C40 Cities, the City of Boston and Cambridge, and District of Columbia

Advice and expertise at every step

The pathway to achieving decarbonization goals includes a number of entry points, all of which our team can expertly launch and lead to meet our clients where they are in their current efforts.

No matter the entry point, our approach to our work begins with and maintains an intense focus on listening and discovery to establish a strong foundation of information, priorities, and current processes, as well as current or future partners and stakeholders. Next, we work closely with decision-makers and points-of-contact to ensure the right tools and technical subject matter expertise are in place to maximize value alongside decarbonization plans, projects and reporting.

Our end goal is not only a clear conclusion to our current task at hand, but also a clear look-ahead to capture the overarching decarbonization goals.
