海角视频 is playing a key role in the delivery of Roig Arena, major new sports and entertainment venue for Spain. At the heart of Valencia, the project is led by LICAMPA 1617, an enterprise founded by Spanish renowned businessman Juan Roig.

The 鈧280m project has been designed in collaboration between global architecture firm HOK and local practice ERRE Arquitectura. Scheduled to open in 2025, the multipurpose venue is poised to become Valencia鈥檚 premier destination for MICE and entertainment.

Challenge

Vanguardia, a 海角视频 company, was engaged to deliver specialist acoustics and audio visual (AV) consultancy. The 47,000m虏 venue seeks to deliver world-class music, sports and corporate events, with a range of multifunctional events spaces and bars as well as the main arena space.

Roig Arena will serve as the home base for both the men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 Valencia basketball teams. With a seating capacity of 15,600 that expands to 18,600 with standing room, the arena will offer an unparalleled spectator experience. Premium hospitality options and a flexible, intimate seating layout further elevate the venue for different kinds of performances.

When determining the success of a multi-function arena, acoustics is a critical factor. Too long a reverberation time and the venue will be unsuitable for concert events, too short and it will fail to deliver the impact and atmosphere required for a live sports event. The frequency response of the reverberation time will add or detract from the events being held and subtleties such as ratios between direct and reverberant sound and late reflections can make a venue unplayable if not carefully controlled through detailed design. The acoustic design must assure a vibrant and energetic atmosphere for sports and optimum acoustic conditions for concerts.

The impact of the arena on nearby residential centres also needs to be considered within the acoustics strategy, to mitigate against noise breaking out from the different activities taking place in the arena above accepted levels.

The arena鈥檚 audio-visual technology component must also be designed to incorporate outstanding solutions that allow the venue to compete with other arenas in the country, to win events and music tours, making Roig Arena one of the preferred options for promoters and artists.

Solution

To enable the arena to perform successfully as a multi-functional venue, it would be necessary to create variable acoustic conditions. This would require adaptability to be built into the space from the earliest design stages, to ensure the acoustic environment within the arena can be changed by means of covering the treatment materials (to change their properties from being an absorber to a reflector) or by removing them entirely from the space through the use of manual or mechanical moveable baffles and acoustic curtains.

Computer modelling (hybrid ray tracing) conducted by the Vanguardia team helped to shape this strategy for adaptable elements within the space and demonstrated that any reflections from untreated surfaces would not give rise to any problematic late reflections.

Our experts conducted a study of the bowl acoustics to highlight any issues with long delayed reflections. This allowed us to highlight issues in the initial bowl design with reflection from the placement of the LED ribbon boards. Mitigation solutions were developed, including tweaking the locations of the sound system elements and incorporating the use of transparent acoustic layers within the LED ribbon boards, which allow the sound to permeate through the structures.

We also played a key role in developing the materiality of the roof structure and facades to mitigate against noise breakout. The use of bass traps was also explored to ensure that the low frequency reverberation time can be controlled. An efficient roof design provided both demonstrable sound insulation and acoustic absorption, as well as guarding against reduced visual impact, structural loading and cost effectiveness. Our experts developed a series of noise models to demonstrate the full impact of noise breakout mitigation interventions to support the planning process.

We supported the client with the choice and procurement of an optimum PAVA (public address and voice alarm) sound system for the venue; as well as with optioneering around digital signage, IPTV systems (internet-based network television broadcasts) and central basketball digital scoreboard systems.

Value

Roig Arena aims to be one of the main entertainment and music venues in the country. Achieving the acoustic adaptability to successfully deliver both was critical to the project鈥檚 success.

Our team of acoustics and AV experts helped to shape a design and strategy that built adaptability into every element of the bowl, delivering an advanced modern arena venue that will lead the industry across both sporting occasions and live music productions.
