Inside Out, Downside Up pavilion at the Copenhagen Architecture Biennial (CAFx)
Copenhagen, Denmark
海角视频 assisted in the realisation of Inside Out, Downside Up, a striking pavilion at the Copenhagen Architecture Biennial that celebrates the potential of reclaimed materials and modular design.
At the heart of the inaugural Copenhagen Architecture Biennial (CAFX), the Inside Out, Downside Up pavilion stood as a tactile and poetic response to the festival鈥檚 theme of 鈥渟low down鈥. Designed by Copenhagen-based studio Slaatto Morsb酶l, the installation celebrated the expressive potential of reclaimed materials 鈥 perforated bricks, salvaged timber, and repurposed ventilation ductwork 鈥 assembled with care and precision to challenge the conventions of fast-paced construction.
海角视频 was proud to support the project, working closely with the architects to help realise their vision and ensure the structure鈥檚 technical integrity.
The involvement of our structural engineering team in Copenhagen was to pay particular attention to the pavilion鈥檚 modularity and disassembly. The ambition was clear: to create a structure that could be easily taken apart and reused, extending its life beyond the biennial and reducing waste. This meant developing connection details that were not only robust and stable 鈥 especially given the waterfront location and exposure to high winds 鈥 but also simple to assemble and dismantle. The result was a series of wall panels and frames that could be bolted together and lifted out with ease, with gaps designed to accommodate forklifts and other equipment for efficient deconstruction.
The design reclaimed bricks and timber required careful assessment and聽detailing,聽demanding a consistent rhythm of repetitive parts to support modular construction. The pavilion鈥檚 roof, formed from halved ductwork, doubled as both cladding and drainage, exemplifying the ingenuity of the architectural concept. Inside, old hay suspended from the ceiling added a sensory layer to the experience, rustling gently in the breeze and reinforcing the installation鈥檚 meditative character.聽
This was very much Slaatto Morsb酶l鈥檚 vision, and our contribution was about enabling that vision to flourish. In doing so, we demonstrated the value of engineering as a collaborative force 鈥 one that supports emerging talent, champions circular design, and helps shape spaces that are both beautiful and responsible.
The pavilion will be relocated and remain publicly accessible. Whilst its future may lie in a new location, its principles 鈥 reuse, modularity, and thoughtful detailing 鈥 will continue to resonate. For 海角视频, this project was a chance to engage with new inspiring, talented architects and to reinforce our commitment to sustainable, low-impact design.

The pavilion was demounted in a matter of hours, clearly demonstrating it鈥檚 principles of circular construction. With building components easily stacked and stored, they were ready to be relocated to their new location.
