FRANKFURT WESTSIDE

Frankfurt, Germany

海角视频 is working with project developer BEOS AG to transform a former chemical site into a sustainable business and innovation park. The development of FRANKFURT WESTSIDE represents the largest regeneration project in the region creating a vibrant new home for creative and innovative industries.

Our experts identified the key sustainability drivers for the site鈥檚 redevelopment 鈥 delivering an Urban Sustainability Vision, which has enabled the project to be pre-certified as DGNB Platinum 鈥 the highest level in Germany鈥檚 leading sustainability certification.

Polyvinyl Chloride 鈥 better known as PVC 鈥 transformed the world in the 20th century, by making plastics commonplace in every conceivable part of our lives. But the place where the technical breakthroughs occurred that led to PVC technologies has long since stood largely empty 鈥 an abandoned relic of an industrial past.

But now this home of 20th century scientific innovation is to undergo a major transformation and rejuvenation to become a new hub for 21st century innovation and sustainable industry.

Once the heart of Germany鈥檚 chemical industry, the former Industriepark Griesheim (IPG), on the banks of the river Main, to the west of Frankfurt city centre, covers an area of more than 70 hectares 鈥 roughly the same size as downtown Frankfurt.

The city itself rose from the ashes of post-war Germany, to become one of Europe鈥檚 most vibrant financial centres. But for decades, the enormous industrial hinterland outside the city has become increasingly abandoned and forgotten. It was here, in 1872 that chemist Eugen Baumann exposed vinyl chloride gas sealed in a tube to sunlight and produced a white solid called PVC. It was the start of a major industry, and in 1913, German chemist Friedrich Klatte received the first patent for polymerising PVC using sunlight.

海角视频 have advised on everything from sustainable energy and waste heat usage to innovative mobility concepts and the integration of the industrial heritage. The evolving masterplan delivers ample spaces for sports and leisure for those who will work in the innovative businesses that will grow in the new district. It has also carefully considered biodiversity 鈥 increasing the habitats for plants and animals.

An unprecedented opportunity for the city of Frankfurt to define the city of the future, the vision is to rejuvenate this once heavily industrial district, while also celebrating the area鈥檚 industrial heritage 鈥 preserving a rich identity, while providing a vibrant new home for the city鈥檚 creative and innovative industries.

Our sustainability experts have advised on the benefits of considering circularity for the development 鈥 from 鈥渦rban mining鈥 or harvesting and reuse of existing materials on site wherever possible, to the recovery of waste heat, such as recovering heat from data centres.

We have advised on the efficient use of the right water for the right purpose, the potential for onsite generation of renewable energy, intermodal sustainable mobility strategies, as well as aspects to improve the well-being of those working at FRANKFURT WESTSIDE in future years.

This transformational project will ensure that the district once at the sharp end of chemical and plastics innovation, now has a bright future of sustainable innovation and emerging green technologies.

Frankfurt鈥檚 largest development area is on the right track to becoming a role model in terms of sustainability. The future of Frankfurt lies in rejuvenated 鈥榣owscrapers鈥 rather than in downtown 鈥榮kyscrapers鈥. FRANKFURT WESTSIDE is a rising star in urban redevelopment.
