Battersea Power Station Arches

London, UK

海角视频 carried out the structural design and ground engineering for the refurbishment of the Network Rail arches on the west side of the Battersea Power Station development.

Our team developed a structural and geotechnical solution that helped gain technical approval and allowed their conversion into a series of popular retail and leisure units. The wider Battersea Power Station redevelopment is seeing the 42-acre former brownfield site transformed into a vibrant community of more than 8 million ft虏 of new mixed-use development consisting of apartments, shops, restaurants, offices and leisure experiences, combined with more than 19 acres of public realm.

The regeneration of Battersea Power Station is one of the most ambitious redevelopment projects in Europe, centred around the restoration of the Grade II* listed landmark and serviced by a聽new Zone 1 Underground station on the Northern Line.听

As well as providing multidisciplinary engineering solutions for the Power Station itself, our experts played a critical role in a range of building and infrastructure schemes across other phases, as well as being key consultants on the strategic masterplan.

We worked closely with architect SimpsonHaugh on the conversion of a series of Network Rail arches which together form Arches Lane. The project was achieved without any impact on the live mainline railway above. For the arches to be used for commercial space they required new below ground drainage, concrete ground slabs, utility connections, facades and in some cases an internal steel frame structure to provide a mezzanine floor, all of which were designed by our engineers.

During the construction phase, the contractor discovered that the existing concrete back wall of the arches lacked foundations. Our engineers developed several innovative structural solutions that provided the required underpinning for the back wall while also retaining the maximum amount of space in the arches. We then worked closely with Network Rail to gain their approval for the chosen solution.

The team鈥檚 design needed to be technically feasible, within the bounds of Network Rail approval while also meeting the client鈥檚 budget and programme aspirations. We developed a good balanced solution to meet this challenge. Our design was developed further by the design and build contractor.

We also worked with the client, the design team and the contractor to develop waterproofing solutions to prevent the ingress of rainwater into the arches, with a new cavity drainage system to ensure against rainwater runoff entering the new retail units.

The converted arches opened to the public in 2018 as a series of retail and food and beverage units. In 2025, our team was reengaged to return to Battersea Power Station to extend the project with three additional arches, and create new public amenities.
