This year, our Urban C:lab team ventured into Athens to investigate how the city is tackling the escalating challenge of extreme heat.

Athens, one of the oldest cities in the world, is facing a future dominated by rising temperatures. As mainland Europe鈥檚 hottest metropolis, the city is experiencing unprecedented heatwaves, with last June being the hottest on record. Our Urban C:lab team explored how we could address these challenges and implement innovative solutions.

Extreme heat in Athens

The report delves into Athens鈥檚 multifaceted approach to combating extreme heat. It highlights the city鈥檚 pioneering efforts, such as appointing Europe鈥檚 first dedicated heat officer, and examines the effectiveness of various initiatives aimed at enhancing urban resilience.

Tour 1: net zero transition: Athens is making strides towards climate neutrality by 2030. However, this transition is under threat from its changing climate. We explored this complex issue as we journeyed through the industrial zone of Eleonas to the city鈥檚 National Gardens.

Tour 2: health and wellbeing: Rising temperatures are causing significant health issues. The report covers various projects aimed at improving liveability, from green-blue corridors in Chalandri to retrofit initiatives in Egaleo and Nikea, emphasising citizen-led solutions and nature-based approaches.

Tour 3: tourism economy: Athens鈥檚 tourism industry is vital but threatened by extreme heat. The report discusses what 鈥榮ustainable tourism鈥� looks like in Athens in light of a recent 鈥榯ourism carrying capacity鈥� study. We explored central Athenian districts to understand the impact of heat on the city鈥檚 reputation as a welcoming destination.
