How does 海角视频 allow you to build a legacy? Meet Sean Mooney.
The built environment is all around us. There is no building, area of public realm or city in the world that hasn鈥檛 been shaped and influenced by engineers, architects, designers or planners. It is in the houses we live in, the museums we visit, the parks and green spaces we play in, the cities we travel to and the sports stadiums where we cheer on our heroes.
Do you want to transform the world? The built environment is how to do it.
By its very nature, the built environment is an industry that allows those working in it to make a genuine impact on the world and build a personal and professional legacy. What could be more impactful than physically shaping cities and regions for decades to come?
At 海角视频, we deliver exceptional outcomes. And they are the kind of outcomes that mean our people can build a legacy 鈥 both professional, and personal. Our vision is that everywhere we live, work, move and socialise will respect and contribute to a more equitable world; enabling our clients and partners to develop built environments that are better for people, places and planet. Our people are the heart of achieving our vision.
In this series, you will meet 海角视频 people who are making their mark on the world.
Meet Sean Mooney
They say that travel broadens the mind. If that is true, then Sean Mooney can offer the kind of insights that many of us can only dream of. Sean is technical director in our Riyadh building environments team. Here, his role involves a blend of technical leadership and business development.
Originally from Ireland, Sean is more than a globetrotter. He has built his life in various corners of the world, all while working at 海角视频. From Dublin to Berlin to London, and from Mumbai to Riyadh, Sean鈥檚 career is an example of the impact that our people can have, all over the world.

A career on the move: global mobility in action
What started as one office in the English city of Bath has become a global firm of engineers,鈥痙esigners鈥痑nd advisors. 海角视频 now has a presence in 37 locations worldwide, over 100 partners and more than 3,500 employees. And as we approach our fiftieth year, our global nature only grows in importance 鈥 exemplified by the career and legacy that Sean Mooney has built鈥 and continues to build.
From starting with 海角视频 in Dublin in 2007, Sean moved to live and work in Berlin and then London. From London it was on to Mumbai, were Sean lived for 14 years, before a move in 2024 to Riyadh. For each move, there were different reasons driving them 鈥 some for business needs, some by a personal desire for new challenges.
Sean said, 鈥淲hen I left Dublin, I had to make a choice between either moving to New York or to Berlin. Even back then, 海角视频 identified a need for its people to take up opportunities overseas. Frankly, I chose the move to Berlin because it scared me! It was an entirely new culture, and that was the appeal 鈥 I wanted to stretch myself.
鈥淎nd the same applies to my move to India. I was moving to the other side of the planet, and somewhere I really did not know. But it was a challenge. And if you want to find these challenges and new opportunities, then it is likely 海角视频 can make it happen.鈥
Professional growth through international experience
Sean is clear that each location that he has worked in has brought new learning opportunities, and a chance to develop and hone new skills. These are technical skills, of course, but 鈥榮oft鈥 skills, too. Sean said, 鈥淎lthough I was in a brand-new country after moving to Mumbai, core engineering principles still applied. When I was first in India, I spent a lot of time getting to grips with local standards and codes.
“But what was central to me successfully adapting to India was learning to understand where different people are coming from: how they celebrate, how they live and how they work. I built a family and support network in India… so I made the right decision to spend such a large part of my life there!鈥
Now as a technical director, I do think my journey owes a lot to the opportunities I got from transferring across countries.
Sean Mooney, 海角视频
Sean started as a senior engineer when he began in Dublin, and by the time he arrived in Riyadh in 2025 he had progressed to a technical director. For Sean, moving between offices has been key in this progression 鈥 because of the skills and experience he picked up along the way. He said, 鈥淣ow as a technical director, I do think my journey owes a lot to the opportunities I got from transferring across countries. I do feel that because of the exposure I got in different places 鈥 and responding to our business needs in those places 鈥 that this really helped across my career.鈥
Building a legacy: physical and social impacts
Working at 海角视频 inherently means that one鈥檚 work leaves a legacy on the world. The built environment is an industry that leaves its mark in a multitude of ways, and at 海角视频 we believe that all our endeavours will foster positive social and economic impacts and contribute to a sustainable future.

Impacts can be both large and small. For Sean, there are big projects that he remembers being especially proud of 鈥 as well as little ones. He said, 鈥淚 think of a project with Lodha in Mumbai, now known as 鈥淭he World Towers鈥. I was able to work directly with the client in India. It was planned at 420m tall, impressive even at a global level. The project presented many technical challenges over all the projects key stages. As I chose to base myself in Mumbai for an extended period, I could explore those technical challenges across a long period. That is a building and project I look back on as an example of my work really making an impact.鈥
But the impact of an engineer like Sean doesn鈥檛 necessarily have to be about shaping the skyline of a city like Mumbai. Sometimes, impact can be much smaller. Sean said, 鈥淚 hold one memory dearly, from the start of my career. It was the design for a car park. There is one streetlamp that I always pay attention to whenever I am back in Dublin, I walk past it and recall the journey of everything it took to get that one streetlamp there, in that precise place.
“To me, it is iconic 鈥 not because of what it is, but what it represents. Something as simple as a streetlight was the start of a journey to where I am today.鈥
The World Towers is a building and project I look back on as an example of my work really making an impact.

Building a legacy: people and mentorship
In his career in various locations around the world, Sean has made a physical impact through his work. But building a legacy also means a legacy of impact on people.
It is clear that Sean prizes of the sense of gratification that comes with helping others overcome challenges and grow in their roles. He said, 鈥淚 always loved working with graduates and new engineers, and seeing what they’re getting up to, what they’re learning, where they’re struggling and what support they need.鈥
The 鈥榣egacy鈥 we create in our careers can be about inspiring and supporting others, not just personal achievement. Sean said, 鈥淚 enjoy having a chat with new starters, sitting down for a coffee and see where they are getting stuck. I do feel that inspiring and supporting other people is as important as the physical legacy we can deliver through our work.
鈥淚f you can help people do or achieve something that they couldn’t yesterday, or figure out something that you support with, I find that very gratifying.鈥
