Event Recap: Built Environment for the Future – Resilient Communities

The ‘Built Environment for the Future’ series of events brings together NextGen communities across the architecture, engineering, and construction industries. In the latest edition of the programme, attendees focused on resilient communities.

The series continues to nurture a cross-disciplinary network created by 海角视频 and for young professionals to learn about and champion sustainability.

Through the lens of resilient communities, three speakers covered a range of different focuses before guests took part in a group discussion around a collection of questions. Discover the key points from each of our guest speaker presentations below.

Guest Speakers

Alice Preston-Jones, Prince’s Foundation, Rapid Planning Toolkit

The rapid planning toolkit provides a repeatable step-by-step plan for urban expansion, looking to address a growing trend towards sprawl and unplanned settlements in urban areas. Unplanned growth is likely to result in a lack of access to basic services, infrastructure, and damage to vital ecosystems and nature.

The rapid plan works towards the UN2030 Sustainable Development Goals through goal 11, sustainable cities and communities.

The four-step methodology consists of writing a charter for your growing city, creating the rapid growth plan, implementing the rapid growth plan, and then building the neighbourhoods.

This process aims to build capacity, encourage collaboration across sectors/disciplines, address rapid population growth and encourage participatory planning.

Nabiha Qadir, Reclaiming Banglatown

This talk focuses on widening access to Bangladeshi Women in Trade, retaining heritage, and providing alternative propositions to the Truman Brewery Development Proposal on Brick Lane.

Participatory planning workshops took place to pool ideas for what makes a comfortable workspace for women, as a coalition seeks to provide alternative ideas for how development on Brick Lane could instead be used. Through this approach, detailed consultation is undergone with the community to source a clear community-led plan for an approach driven by residents.

Vaishali Senthil, 海角视频, Brent Cross Town

Vaishali, a sustainability and physics engineer here at 海角视频, gave a talk on the proposed regeneration of the Brent Cross Town area and an associated new way of measuring how well the people in the town are doing. This is termed the ‘Floushering Index’.

To gather a robust 2021 baseline for data as part of the flourishing index, 海角视频 collected data through five modes. These were:

  • National survey data to compare with a bespoke survey,
  • Interviews (Group and individual),
  • Intercept/Online Surveys,
  • Direct Behaviour observation,
  • Air pollution

Through these measures, 海角视频 is able to track how the community is ‘flourishing’ and introduce measures that will cater to the needs of the townspeople.

What did we learn?

  • There must be a legible and transparent process for all developments that must continually be recorded and reviewed.
  • We have to strive to widen and improve methods of communication with the community.
  • Developers and public authorities must do more to support a wider representation of engagement with local communities.
  • There is a responsibility and accountability from both the community and development team for proactive engagement.
