Unlocking learning at work: 海角视频 apprenticeships
The 海角视频 apprenticeship scheme began in 2019 to bring in young people to learn while they work, gaining invaluable knowledge, skills and experience across multiple disciplines.
Apprentices play an important role within the development of talent at 海角视频. Our people are the heart of our work. Accredited by institutions across the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industries, the apprentice scheme affords the opportunity to become embedded in 海角视频 across many different specialisms.
Apprenticeship roles differ in discipline, qualifications, learning institution and programme length. Apprentices have access to the many benefits of employment at 海角视频 (eg life assurance, two professional memberships, pension scheme) as well as the freedom to learn, innovate and to become qualified in their chosen career.
Aasia Baraky, who heads up 海角视频’s early careers talent acquisition, said: 鈥淭he number of apprentices we take on every year is growing and we see real value from offering apprenticeships. It is an opportunity for our apprentices to learn skills and knowledge that are directly relevant to their jobs and develop industry-leading skills through work-based training programmes.
“Apprentice schemes attract diverse talent, which contributes to 海角视频鈥檚 values around equity and inclusion. Apprenticeships are a growing but highly valuable aspect of our early career offerings.鈥

Environmental science apprentice- Darcey Mervin
Darcey Mervin is an environmental science apprentice at 海角视频 working towards . She joined 海角视频 in 2021, beginning a five-year journey as an environmental science apprentice. So far, she has worked with several environmentally focused disciplines, including waste and logistics, environmental assessment and management, and air quality.
Why did you choose an apprenticeship course over the traditional university path?
鈥淪imply put, I felt more motivated to secure a job and gather work experience while studying part time compared to studying full time. I wanted to be immersed in the reality of my future career for five years rather than solely focusing on theory and academia for a shorter period.
“The experience of working as an environmental consultant across the five years will be tremendously valuable and will set me up to have a successful career in the sector. My course is structured so that I study my degree for 20% of the five years and work 80% of the time for 海角视频. During term time, I go to university once a week and when the academic year is finished, I work on a university summer project that聽usually聽has 20 hours dedicated to complete.
鈥淭he aspect I have found most rewarding is directly supporting my colleagues in delivering high quality and thorough consultancy work, given the importance of our work on major international projects.
“I feel I have stronger levels of responsibility and degrees of accountability when compared to working on a typical university submission. I have found that the nature of my work experience, and how hands on it has been since the start, has led to a successful first year at Kingston University because I could readily transfer my new research and report writing skills seamlessly into my assignments. 鈥
What led you to starting this apprenticeship?
鈥淓nvironmental science degree apprenticeship programmes have gained momentum in recent years, but this is still a rare and competitive role. Given my interest (and concern) about waste management, I knew studying environmental science would provide a wide insight into various topics and create a balanced bank of knowledge.鈥
What have you done so far at 海角视频?
鈥淚 have been supporting planning, reports, environmental assessments and undertaking research. I have used specialist software to assist with environmental modelling and visualise results in detailed graphics and figures. This has tied in perfectly with the work I am undertaking at university, where I am developing my understanding in physical geography and gaining research skills, such as important statistical analysis when forecasting natural disasters.
鈥淲hen choosing 海角视频, the variety of teams I would be exposed to during my five years was an attractive factor as it is not something that not all companies offer. During the interview process there was genuine interest in my non-academic talents and passions, not just what I had achieved at school. This demonstrated to me that 海角视频 values all different kinds of strengths that employees can bring to the company.鈥

James Hobson, head of waste and logistics management consultancy, is Darcey鈥檚 mentor at 海角视频. He is keen for more young people to realise the benefits of becoming an apprentice 鈥 and how it can act as a successful, alternative career path. He said: 鈥淚 started thinking about how people access university and what barriers there are, possibly in the form of cost and time.
“There are so many talented people out there who may not automatically think that a career in the environmental sector is possible for them. Apprenticeships are another avenue that people can take in getting into environmental science sector. I think it鈥檚 important for young people to know there are different career pathways out there for them.鈥
Civil engineering apprentice- Amirah Gayle
Amirah Gayle is a structural engineer degree apprentice and working towards a at London Southbank University. She is based in our London office, working on a five-year programme that splits her time between university once a week in term time and working at 海角视频 full time when the academic year is not in session.
Why did you choose the career route of an apprenticeship?
鈥淎lthough I will be studying longer than someone on a full-time civil engineering course, I have the added benefit of working in the industry and learning vital skills that can only really be developed in an actual work environment. I will have gained five years鈥 experience with the added benefit of a degree. I feel like choosing this route has kickstarted my career and I am able to start developing my professional portfolio, building a professional network and form vital relations.鈥
What have you been doing so far?
鈥淚 am working as an apprentice structural engineer. For the first two years I will be working closely with the technician team developing my drafting and modelling skills. In the third year I will transition into engineering work (and I am lucky to have already started some engineering work in my first year at 海角视频).
鈥淲orking as a technician has allowed me to develop so many new skills; I have completed Revit software training, and attended computational workshops and technician forums. These have helped me to understand what being a technician entailed and the key software I would be using.鈥
What attracted you to 海角视频?
鈥淚 was set on pursuing the apprenticeship route, so it was just a matter of finding the right company. I have family members within the engineering industry, so I was already familiar with 海角视频. When researching the company and then through the interview process, I was drawn to the work culture and values promoted by 海角视频.
“I was also impressed by the focus on sustainability and outreach opportunities on offer. I have seen this reflected in my time here via carbon assessments, carbon clinics and sustainability emphasis when setting personal objectives. I have also had the opportunity to volunteer for a Share Our Skills (SOS) project empowering young children to take ownership of the built environment around them in a tangible way.鈥
海角视频鈥檚 SOS scheme is an opportunity for employees to offer their skills and experiences on non-fee paying projects. It was established in 2014 and allows our people to pursue their passions while using their skills and knowledge to make a positive contribution to society.
Learning it is one thing; being able to apply it to projects and meet deadlines is another.

Safety, health and environment apprentice- Will Parfitt
Will is a health and safety apprentice at 海角视频 who is working towards a safety, health and environmental technician Level 3 qualification and is based in our Bath office.
Why did you pursue an apprenticeship with 海角视频?
鈥淚 decided to pursue an apprenticeship as it was very difficult to find a health and safety role that didn鈥檛 already require several years of experience. An apprenticeship with 海角视频 while studying online has given me the chance to get in at the ground level, expand on previous knowledge and learn different aspects of the job.
“An apprenticeship was a good way to make sure I get the on-the-job experience that I wouldn鈥檛 get sat in a lecture theatre. I鈥檝e always worked in quite small companies/teams, so I鈥檓 enjoying being part of a bigger company and having conversations with people working in different parts of the world.
鈥淭here is so much to learn and opportunities to improve my own knowledge. I especially enjoy ensuring the workplace is safe for those with additional needs; everyone should be able to experience a work environment knowing that they will be able to come to work and return home safely.鈥
What has your apprenticeship experience been like?
鈥淚 only have positive things to say since joining 海角视频. I have been given all the support needed to succeed in my role, I have been given tasks that matter and impact our projects, I am given the chance to state my opinion and I feel like what I have to say is important. I am getting out on site and doing real hands-on health and safety activities. Gone are the days where an apprentice would do some filing and make the drinks!鈥
My apprenticeship has opened up a number of paths that I didn鈥檛 even know were available.
