Digitize to humanize: Robert Okpala on innovation, impact, and the future of the built environment

At 海角视频, technology is not just a tool for efficiency; it鈥檚 a catalyst for creativity, equity, and transformation.

As US Buildings Technology Lead, Robert Okpala is leading a movement that redefines what it means to be a technologist in the AEC industry. His work spans automation, data modeling, and AI, but what sets his approach apart is a deep commitment to humanizing the digital experience. Whether it鈥檚 mentoring underserved talent, building open-source platforms, or facilitating global collaboration, Okpala鈥檚 vision is rooted in impact.

In this conversation, we explore how 海角视频 is leveraging tools like Building Habitats Object Model (BHoM) and rapid prototyping to solve complex challenges, how automation is freeing up space for creativity, and how emerging technologies like AI agents could reshape the future of design. Most importantly, we look at how innovation – when guided by empathy – can create lasting value for clients, communities, and the planet.

What does innovation mean in the built environment?

What does innovation mean to you in the context of the built environment, and how does 海角视频 approach it differently?

Robert Okpala: Innovation, to me, is simply the creation and implementation of new ideas, methods, or products to improve existing solutions. The key word is implementation. At 海角视频, we embrace a culture that encourages everyone to be a 鈥減rofessional worshiper of change.鈥 That belief – that everyone has a desire to create – is foundational to our approach.

The built environment is both intricate and distributed. There are many collaborators that need to align on a common goal to deliver a vision through development, design, construction and operations. For me that demands a continual mindset of creativity and innovation that maximizes opportunities and overcomes the challenges as they materialize. Our culture thrives on this creativity and innovation not just as a concept, but as a daily practice embedded in how we work.

How does your team leverage tools like BHoM and rapid prototyping to accelerate problem-solving and design thinking?

Okpala: Tools like and rapid prototyping have helped us unlock the human side of technology. BHoM allows team members to work in their preferred environments – whether that鈥檚 Rhino, Revit, Excel, or any integrated environment – while sharing data collaboratively through a common framework. It鈥檚 a powerful enabler of cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Rapid prototyping, on the other hand, aligns performance outcomes across stakeholders. It creates a tangible, shared understanding of 鈥渨hat good looks like鈥 in design and construction. Built on a game engine platform, it鈥檚 highly visual and intuitive, helping teams test and iterate data against real-world outcomes in a way that鈥檚 accessible and engaging.

Can you share a recent example where innovation at 海角视频 directly benefited a client or community project?

Okpala: One of the most meaningful examples came through our partnership with a workforce development organization called . They help overlooked and underappreciated talent – often from underserved communities – enter well-paying jobs in the construction industry.

We invited one of their team members into our office to work with data, BIM models, and digital twins. It was transformative. That experience not only opened doors for the individual but also sparked new thinking within our team. Sometimes, innovation is about unlocking opportunity and impact – across individuals, organizations, and the broader AEC ecosystem.

What role does automation play in enhancing both creativity and efficiency in your work?

Okpala: We鈥檙e deeply passionate about automation. Our global computational team is constantly exploring ways to improve workflows using bespoke coding, machine learning, parametric modelling and partnerships with innovative startups. But automation isn鈥檛 just about speed – it鈥檚 about freeing up time for creativity, innovations and collaborative endeavors.

We focus on understanding workflows, both individual and collaborative, so that automation can enhance – not replace – human ingenuity. As projects become more data-rich and complex, automation helps us dig deeper, work smarter, and stay agile in a rapidly changing landscape. We digitize to humanize.

Fostering a culture of innovation

How do you foster a culture of innovation across disciplines and geographies at 海角视频?

Okpala: Culture is hard to define, but you can feel it. At 海角视频, there鈥檚 a palpable sense of permission to explore, create, and engage – even outside your direct role. We talk a lot about digitization, but we鈥檙e equally focused on humanizing the digital journey.

We build tools in response to real challenges, not just for the sake of technology. BHoM, for example, was born out of a need for faster, more collaborative data sharing across diverse platforms. Our innovation culture is global and seamless – our teams collaborate across borders, and our technology is designed to support that fluidity.

You鈥檝e expressed interest in corporate philanthropy – how do you see technology and innovation contributing to social impact initiatives?

Okpala: Technology can feel unequal at times – even in cities like New York, access to basic infrastructure like the internet isn鈥檛 universal. That鈥檚 why we鈥檙e committed to using our expertise to empower communities.

We鈥檝e engaged our design innovation with community partners the New York City Chinatown Night Market that was a strategic response to heightened social and cultural isolation during the pandemic.  We have supported similar events on the US West Coast where we support educators to bring colleges together to implement the goals of Los Angeles County. These engagements help demystify technology and make it accessible. Innovation, when done right, can be a tool for equity and empowerment.

Looking ahead, what emerging technologies are you most excited about integrating into our client offerings?

Okpala: I see two exciting streams. First, technical tools like BHoM and our rapid prototyping platform, which enable seamless collaboration and complex data analysis. These help teams align solutions and understand their impact from multiple perspectives.

Second, AI agents and general intelligence. There鈥檚 a lot of buzz around it, but I鈥檓 most interested in how AI can help us humanize our work. Whether it鈥檚 addressing climate change, supporting displaced communities, or improving everyday life, I want to see technology that enhances empathy, understanding, and social value.
