Celebrating our conservation work on heritage buildings

On UNESCO鈥檚 World Heritage Day, we honour all cultural heritage buildings, places and landscapes of significance.

The built heritage has come to us throughout history enduring wars, social and political unrest, the injury of time, and threats of demolition. We see it as our duty to protect it and pass it down to future generations.

The refurbishment and reuse of existing buildings also help fight climate change by cutting the embodied carbon quota of a development. This, in turn, reduces the carbon footprint of the entire building industry.

At 海角视频 we strongly believe that the best preservation is through reuse. A lived-in / worked-in / visited building is one that is maintained and taken care of.

The return is not only economic. The significance of a preserved landmark for a local community can sprout the regeneration of an entire area with increased property value and investment returns.

This is why 海角视频 has engaged in the conservation and refurbishment of historic and listed heritage buildings for many years, developing considerable experience and expertise. Bringing together our multi-disciplinary capabilities, respectful and sensitive approach and modern computational skills, we work with owners, design teams and local planning authorities.

Here are some examples of our heritage work around the world.

Atturaif, Ad-Diriyah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Once the seat of governance of the House of Saud, historic Atturaif was abandoned in 1818 when the Ottomans seized the city. Nearly 200 years later in 2007, work began to restore it as The Atturaif Living Museum.

海角视频 managed the project, leading the integrated team of architects, engineers, restoration consultants, quantity surveyors and contractors. Together we revived the 58 acres of ruins to a site of cultural significance, ensuring compliance with the ICOMOS Charters to achieve UNESCO World Heritage status in 2010.

SAP Garden, Munich, Germany

The SAP Garden arena is a new multi-functional sports arena, which is being constructed in the Olympic Park in Munich. A heritage site, this is where the Olympic Games were held in 1972.

In order to respect the historical value and the site, the arena is designed to blend organically with its landscape. On completion, it will undoubtedly be a gift to ice hockey and basketball fans. But it will also be appreciated by the many local people and tourists who will be able to visit and enjoy the landscape.

Hyde Park Picture House, Leeds, UK

The Hyde Park Picture House in Leeds is a gem. A Grade II listed, single screen cinema dating back to 1914, it features the only working gas lighting system in the world.

海角视频 provided multi-disciplinary services to the refurbishment project, much of which took place on this heritage building while the historic cinema remained in use. With the preservation of the building鈥檚 heritage and character at its heart, the project also aimed to improve audience experience, reduce running costs and create a sustainable future.

Erie Canal, New York State, US

The Reimagine the Canals initiative reimagines the Erie Canal, a historic 19th century engineering marvel, as a 21st century waterway and recreation corridor. It is an unprecedented opportunity to reignite economic and environmental resiliency across New York State. 海角视频 was proud to support this transformative initiative as lead consultant.

New York State Governor Cuomo鈥檚 proposal is to repurpose the waterway, which stretches more than 350 miles from Albany to Buffalo. The aim is to grow regional tourism, reduce flooding, improve irrigation, restore wetlands and support outdoor recreation such as fishing.

Tsim Sha Tsui Cultural Centre, Hong Kong

Completed in 1988, this harbourside landmark sits on the site of the former Kowloon Station alongside the historic Clock Tower, itself a declared monument.

To achieve expansive, column-free interiors that deliver optimum acoustics in performance areas and an open ambience throughout, 海角视频 created a winning structural design solution. The reinforced concrete wall beams and floor slabs achieve the strength and flexibility required without the need for additional internal supporting structures.

We also developed an innovative roof structure that sweeps and dips, echoing the nearby waves. Consisting of draped tensile cable netting encased in concrete, this incredibly thin yet durable structure withstands typhoon winds off the South China Sea.
